the Jester, I have pondered this same question.
There is no problem with classes.
It would be interesting to see how many splatbook feats don't have PHB feats as prerequisites - whether they would constitute a viable broad base for character creation. I suspect they would. Also with spells. Plenty of different magic items in splatbooks.
The game would play differently, and that is what fascinates me.
But I just can't let go of the Fighter. To me, No Fighter = Not D&D. Funny thing, but there it is.
So I'd keep the Fighter, and dump everything else.
