No more Firefly - what next?

Another old BBC sci-fi series that might interest you is "Blake's Seven". Watched it on public televison back in the day. I believe that it is out on DVD. Great idea for a d20 Future game by the way! Now that I think about it, it is very similar to Farscape.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here. The ones that have been mentioned are good. Later Eps of Smallville are really good. But I would like to point out a sleeper that caught me by surprise. For about 6 months, I was living with two girls and another guy in a shared house. And the girls were really into this show. At first I was thinking "another chick show..." Then one day I was in a conversation with them when the show came on. They politely asked if we could finish talking when the show was over. I said sure. So I watched an ep. Things I was impressed with:

the situations - stuff you don't see on normal TV... well kinda... it was like the writers would take the mundane and dive so far into it that it came out weird. Sort of the mirror image to Science Fiction, weirdness through the known rather than the unknown.

the dialogue - while not realistic, it was amasingly clever. Very call and response-ish. But with emotion. there was a constant sas to it.

this was not a "weird episode" either. It was like this every week. this was a show that jumped the shark at day 1. And makes a point to jump the shark regularly and often. It might as well be called "jump the shark." Pure genius.

Well developed characters - if not stereotypical. In a sort of Alice in Wonderland sort of way.

I absolutely fell in love with (well, I wont buy it, but...) The Gilmore Girls when they added Sebastian Bach from Skid Row as a burnt out metal head regular to the shows emo-inspired teen band. At that point I was like "Don't fire your writers, EVER."

Sue me for liking a chick show and posting about it here. But its a really well done program.

Aaron.
Amen, Brother Jester! Preach on!

I started watching Gilmore Girls two seasons ago, and really enjoy the show for all of the reasons you listed. The writing on that show is amazingly good.

It's on dvd now here in the states. Try it...bit hokey and wayyy low productions values..but then they all were that way back then.

Me too! There was a storyline with a house where passages in time opened up, and ghost-like figures would appear to the sound of nursery rhymes. Thirty years later, I still occasionally have nightmares about the English Civil War soldiers with the coffin, and the whispered chant of 'Upstairs and downstairs, upstairs and downstairs ...'

Holy thread necro, Batman! ;)

Hey, some of us are still trying to fill the Firefly void, you know!

I've found other TV to watch, but nothing quite does it.

I suspect the only way would be to get more Firefly.

I also miss Firefly, I suggest the following (they help a bit)

1. Stargate SG1
2. Stargate Atlantis
3. Sliders (seasons 1 and 2, 3 could be MUCH better)
4. Eureka (only on Itunes right now)
5. Black Adder
6. Fawlty Towers
7. Watch Firefly again?

Eureka is good. Season 2 comes out this summer.

I'm working through Farscape from Netflix, and that's good.

I like the Dresden Files

Rent Dinosaurs? (Not the Mama!)

How about some anime via Cowboy Bebop?

Farscape? Babylon 5? Dead Like Me?

Seconded.

Also, if you're anime inclined, try Trigun.

And obviously Whedon's other hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Oh, and (most of) Stargate SG-1 is good stuff.
