No Swordsman Skill For Me (Bad Wick, Bad)

Is hell freezing over? Is JohnWick really playing a D&D3e/D20 game? I never thought I'd see the day.
Mr wick if your still reading this are you working on anything we should know about?
I truly miss his writing at the old rpgoutpost

Not only is he playing in a WoT game, but he's also playing in a low magic D&D game that I run, *and* a standard D&D game run by Matt Colville. (He of the Liber Bestarius and Star Trek/LotR games) I've even got the pizza stained character sheets for proof. :)

As for what, if anything, he's working on, I'll leave that up to him to discuss.

Hyrum.

As far as I can see (and I may have missed something; that's the point of all this), in the scope of the d20 system, there's no way for me to pick up a "Fencing Skill." I have to pick up a whole level of Armsman or Fighter or something like that. But I don't want that. I want to learn how to fight with a sword. I don't want the armor skills and Feats or how to fight with a polearm or axe or anything like that. Just swordsman.

That's because "Fencing" isn't a skill, its a combat technique. Unless your refering to Fencing as a sport which would just be Profession (Fencer).

As mentioned before, there are about a zillion feats associated with combat techniques but I would start with Weapon Focus and then move to Expertise and Improved Disarm etc.

Unlike other games, d20 gives each character a general combat effectiveness stat (BAB). You can't be Death Incarnate with a battle-axe and then suddenly turn into a bumbling bafoon if you replace your axe with a mace. What your asking for is similar to a character who is a fighter to say "I don't want to be a wizard, I just want to learn how to cast Fireball. Where's my Fireball Skill?"

Am I missing something with the d20 system? Is there any way for me to do this without going off my "noble track?"

If your spending all your time learning to fight, your already off your "noble track". However, if you just want a little extra practice with a particular weapon, Weapon Prof and Weapon Focus simulate this just fine.

There is in Silver Age Sentinels d20, which ditched the "traditional" D&D 3E system of feats and skills in favor of a completely different skill system which works like the Tri-Stat System, but I'm afraid to say any more since SAS d20 seems to be a dirty word on this message board...!

???

Unsure of what you mean here, B.F. I don't recall any recent SAS-bashing in recent memory - I must have completely overlooked that thread...

The current issue of Dragon - 301 - has a Campaign Components feature about swashbucklers, which includes an overview of how various classes and races can be swashbucklers, and it includes fencing/swordfighting styles or schools which are along the lines of the martial arts styles in Oriental Adventures.

It's somewhere in this forum, but I can't afford to do a search to find the thread.

See, I started playing d20 System games after SAS d20 came out and since this EN World the d20 place to be, I thought I'd start coming here. But then I read the beat-down and figured maybe I should lurk instead...

Still with all the new games coming out I thought I'd sign up and start posting. But now SAS d20 is taking another beating in the Shane thread in General RPG Discussion, so I guess nothing's changed! :(
