Background
Pete spent ten years in the bureau in the Baltimore field office, never much distinguishing himself. Quiety competent, he failed to cut the figure the higher-ups prefered, and as a consequence tended to draw the scut work - background checks and the like. Three years ago he'd finally had enough and left to work in the private sector. His salary is a little better, but otherwise not much has changed. He figures he should have expected that.
Pete was raised in working-class Baltimore by his grandmother, a Polish immigrant and domestic tyrant. His father was absent - Pete doesn't even know his name - and his mother is a terminal flake. These days she's cleaned herself up and is taking tickets on the MARC, but they don't talk much.
In college, Pete majored in accounting and applied to the academy mostly to piss off his grandmother. He may have also had some romantic ideas about service and justice, but that was a long time ago and who remembers?
Pete's trying to turn his life around and has recently quit smoking and is trying to eat better and drink less. Again. As usual, it's making him pretty miserable.
Pete is a licensed private investigator in Baltimore (and possibly DC and VA? Does that happen?) with a valid weapons permit.
Personality
Pete's emotional state keeps mostly to a well worn path between exasperation and resignation. He thinks himself intellectually superior to nearly everyone he meets, but secretly fears that, in reality, he's quite stupid and will be discovered as a fraud at any moment.
Description
Short, balding, and schlumpy. Indifferent with his personal grooming. In the movie, he would be played by Paul Giamatti.
