I kinda-sorta did this with my last character.
He was a Gnome Illusionist and I was attempting to simultaneously specialize him in illusions (of course) and summoning. He had a crossbow but he rarely fired it. He did use Color Spray on more than one occasion though.
My plan was to get him to 3rd level and then have him Invisible for most of our fights while he used summoned monsters and illusions of more monsters (and other things as well) to keep the enemy off balance while the rest of the party chopped them to bits. In addition, he was set up to be the king of utility spells and was developing a sizable pool of low level utility scrolls.
Sadly, he was killed in a TPK while he was 4th level against a group of adversaries we should never have been fighting (circumstances didn't let me do the Invisible thing that time around). His bat familiar, Severus, was the only surviving party member.
