Non-random D&D Miniatures

Kunimatyu said:
Drawing on Reaper's vast experience in miniatures and a catalog of 1000's of metal models to design Legendary Encounters, Legendary Encounters will quickly become the most popular prepainted plastic miniatures line on the market.

I hate advertising-speak. It makes me want Reaper to fail.

Would you wait until the product is out to say whether it will be successful or not?

Cheers!

Why would you want Reaper to fail? That's a very strange reaction to the announcement

Firstly, having a little competition is no bad thing. What level of competition that will be will only be known when the first figures are produced and we get a chance to see what they're like and how much they cost.

Secondly, it improves the size of the market for RPG players who prefer the plastic pre-painted option. Reaper have produced some fantastic stuff and if they can carry that over to their plastic minis then that's all the better as far as I am concerned.

I'll certainly be checking them out and I wish them all the success.

I think we will know when we figure out the distribution set up for Reaper. I believe this is the single most deciding factor when deciding if this is a competetive product, or a complement to the WotC line up.

I'm guessing this will be more of a situation where Reaper pick up the crumbs left by WotC, and will not have a major, or any, impact on the DDM product.

I think it's good, and I will buy Reaper minis to check out. But I don't think it will make a dent in DDM sales. Unless Reaper gets really good distribution.

Because their copywriter sucks. Big time.

Saying "this will be the biggest thing!" as if it is fact annoys me. I had exactly the same reaction to Cry Havoc, btw. "The definitive guide to d20 Mass Combat". Oh please, no. And Complete Adventurer. "[This book provides] everything you need to sharpen the skills and enhance..." Right. So, what is Complete Scoundrel?

As far as non-random minis go: Fantastic! :) I love the DDM line, but being able to get 100 orcs cheaply at my FLGS would be great. Well, probably not my FLGS - they wouldn't be able to carry these minis. But my NSLGS (Not so local gaming store)... yes.

Reaper is probably the best company (bar Hasbro) to do this. I daresay they'll be quite affordable... although I'm not sure at how good the range will be. Keeping them in stock perpetually (as they note in the announcement) will be very interesting.

Cheers!

This may or may not be a great development.

I love the idea of someone else doing prepainted plastic miniatures. However, I want the DDM line to be able to sustain itself long enough to get many of the proprietary monsters done.

I'd very much like to see Reaper do Large, Huge, Gargantuan and Colossal minis.

Very interesting news. We will see if Reaper is able to break Merric's law, since so far there is no mention of figure price.

It will probably hold itself long enough. Wizards/Hasbro has still more recognition value than Reaper, and DDM is a standalone game as well. And seemingly it is good enough to sell expansions with the current rate - I don't know if RPG-use only has done this.

Reaper's pre-painted minis are perfect for RPG-players, and will probably find a niche: The RPG-players who don't want metal minis, but the slick pre-painted DDM-style minis, but loath the random distribution/ebay-hunting.

Looking forward to it. And what Merric's Law will say 'bout it.

Me, too. Monopolies are never good. With another line (provided it's decent), those who are fed up with Wizards can get their prepainted plastic minis elsewhere.

And that is not to be discounted. Wizards has their fanboys (who buy everything Wizards releases), but they also have people who hate their guts, and others with some disdain for Wizards who bought DDM because there was no alternative. I guess Reaper will get lots of customers from there.

However, I want the DDM line to be able to sustain itself long enough to get many of the proprietary monsters done.

They're mostly done now, aren't they? After Night Below, we'll have several mindflayers (including an Alhoon), a Beholder, and a Death Tyrant Beholder ("Beholder Lich").

Plus, aren't there (metal) minis of figures that have a certain likeness to the Non-SRD core critters? I'm sure they can cast those in plastic as well.

I find it all mildly amusing that during a discussion where many folks all claim how ridiculous of an endeavor non-random minis are, that a prominent company jumps up and declares that they are in fact going ahead with the process.

I am happy with the news, and if there is any company that could do well in this area, reaper is it. I look forward to seeing their initial offerings.

Mainly it's the demons, devils, yugoloths, demodands, modrons, etc. that still remain to be done as well as the huge (and larger) creatures from throughout their intellectual properties.
