Non-RPG Sci-Fi/Fantasy threads

Well, that was fun

Looking at the Gen Discussion page right now, I see several Star Wars threads, and X-Files thread, a Farscape thread, and have in the past seen numerous Buffy, Angle, LotR, Spiderman etc. threads.

I'm not interested in having an OT forum, but I'm vaguely wondering about accomodating these subjects as they are very closely linked to D&D and enjoyed by many of the same people.

So - would any of these suggestions be welcome:

*A sci-fi/fantasy forum. This would NOT be an OT forum, but one specifially for discussion on sci-fi/fantasy films and TV, along with spoilers etc.

*Coverage of these in the daily news? Not in a major way, but maybe another "section" like "d20 News", "Community News" etc. where I mention things like Star Wars trailers appearing online, release dates of films etc. being announced, the occasional scoop or bit of speculation about upcoming films/TV?

As I see it, with the FR TV show etc. coming up, there is going to be more and more overlap between the subjects I currently cover and with other types of media. Only a small section of this would be relevant to the site (basically the sci-fi/fantasy stuff).

Then again, are these subjects already covered adequately elsewhere? There are some pretty big sites out there that already deal with this type of thing in detail. The only reason I ask is that, although you might think that these are covered well-enough elsewhere, people still want to talk about it all here with the poeple they know.

Shouldn't this be in meta? *ducks*

Seriously.... I think if you feel it's needed, a Sci/fi and fantasy forum would be good. Not necessary, but could be fun :)

I don't think we need news on this on the front page. There are plenty of sites which do this already

Well each time you create a another forum you're simply dividing the posts into different areas that many are less likely to look at. I know that I would never go into the sci-fi/fantasy board unless I needed to ask a question. However, I would likely take a peek at such a thread here if it peaked my interest. I like the high concentration of stuff on the "general forum" While I agree that it is necessary to have a separate board for rules, various D20 ones, and a few others, I think to many boards is a bad thing. Art for instance, should stay here in general forum. :>

As for the news page, I think it would be a good idea as long as there was not a ton of it and it is clearly divided into a separate section of the news for the day. Major things like starts of a new series, new movies, conventions, etc.

Not to highjack the thread but while we are on the topic, was any date given on the FR TV show?

I'm with Darklance. I would probably not really bother to go to such a forum very often if it existed, but I like having the occasional interesting thread on those topics. As for the news, I would say go for it, as long as you keep it to the fairly major points. I don't have enough of an interest to check a whole separate site for this news, but it would be nice to hear about the significant developments.

On a separate note, how come your proposal is for SF/F films and TV, but not books? Doesn't anyone read anymore?

I vote you make a separate forum for this stuff (which I will go to often). If you are going to make a separate forum, it might work, and it would alleviate this forum for more RPG-oriented discussion.

I would personally really like to see an end to EVERY SINGLE WEEK a thread, sometimes more than one each week, on EACH new Angel episode, and EACH new Buffy episode. It's crazy! Major sci-fi / fantasy events I can understand. Movie releases I can understand. TV show premiers and season / series finales I can understand. Single books I can understand. Even the occasional major TV series event I can understand. But WEEKLY TV shows, each episode? Come on! There are boards out there dedicated to that stuff, go find one!

I think both suggestions are pretty good. The General forum really seems to be cluttering up with the Star Wars threads, and I can still vividly remember what it was like back in December around the Fellowship of the Rings release. Yes, we definitely could use a forum like that.

I say: No new forum.

The General RPG forum works fine as it is. With dividing them up, I think it would be the RPG part of the discussion that'd get hurt rather than the Sci-Fi/Fantasy thingy.

Darned good question...

I happen to like the sci-fi/fantasy threads. Lots of games are linked to TV shows and movies, and the people who play genre games will likely read the books and watch the shows.

As to having a separate forum... I can see arguments either way. I think these threads add to the traffic on the gen'l board, but not in a bad way. I can understand thinking them as being a bit of a clutter, though...

I, personally, don't find them intrusive on the Gen'l board. If you put them away in another forum, I'd probably go there to read them, and still keep reading Gen'l too.

This is an extraordinary time, with Star Wars' release, the major TV series having their finales this week and the new season of Farscape about to start.

I'd recommend waiting until this time next month; I'll bet (barring a major catastrophe) we'll have a lot fewer OT threads.
