Non-Superhero Books

Maus, Art Spiegelman
From Hell, Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell
V For Vendetta, Alan Moore and David Lloyd
Lone Wolf and Cub, Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima
Cannot recommend these titles enough. Lone Wolf is one of the greatest manga series ever, while Maus for me is one of the best pieces of fiction written about the Holocaust. As for the last two, hey, it's Alan Moore. What more incentive do you need? ;)

Needless to say, Blankets and Maus are awesome, if you want to venture even further away from Superhero comics. Joe Sacco's stuff and Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis are v good too.

Y The Last Man is good, good stuff.

As for something that hasn't been suggested...if you like Star Wars, check out Star Wars Legacy. An absolutely great story so far and there's a trade out for the first story arc, too.

Not much now that powers has turned into a superhero book.

So, just Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 and a couple of Star Wars books.

Usagi Yojimbo (Rabbit Bodyguard) - Usagi is a ronin in Feudal Japan, and he meets up with rogues, bandits, various supernatural creatures and monsters, etc. Very good book.

Conan, of course. Soon to be restarted at #1 when the new creative team comes on board, but it will really be a continuation.

Age of Bronze
Loveless
Walking Dead

Not mentioned yet:

Rex Mundi
BPRD and Hellboy minis (borders on superheroes, but more dark modern fantasy)
Castle Waiting (buy the collections and then start with the new ongoing series)
Red Star (collections, there is an ongoing called Sword of Lies but it comes out few and far between)
Hedge Knight (although I dont know the future of this title given Babel Bros split with Marvel)
Doktor Sleepless
Death Jr
Courtney Crumrin

I will also gladly echo:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the recent series, know nothing about the older ones)
Most of the CrossGen Stuff
Mouse Guard
and Bone

and agree that NewUniversal is great and only borders on Superheroes, even less so than some of the ones I mention above.
