How does weapon Proficiencies work?

Depending on your character class you will have certain weapon proficiencies. For most classes you have proficiency with a category of weapons, like Military Melee. Some classes have specific weapons, etc, but you'll have a list. Certain races might add to that list, like elves have longbow proficiency no matter what class they are.

If you are proficient with a weapon then you get to add the proficiency bonus for that weapon when you use it in combat. This adds to your to-hit roll. Most weapons have +2 proficiency bonus, but some like swords that are more based on skill have a +3.

There are also feats you can take, Weapon Proficiency mainly, that let you get proficiency with additional weapons if you need it.

How do i use my augments points like if it says augment 2 how many points are used?

Augment 2 means you used 2 points. Some augmentable powers allow for several levels of augmentation, in which case you have a choice of how much to spend. Once you reach the end of the encounter and take a short rest your points return.

Humans are good for any class really. It is hard to say that there is one really best choice.

Is shardmind worth making a control wizard?

Shardminds make good wizards in general and they can go with +2 INT/WIS which is what you want for an orb wizard. So, yeah, they're pretty good. The other good choices are Eladrin and Deva.

What is the 1[W] on an atk and it will say 2[W] higher level etc.

The W refers to the damage die type of weapon you are using. Powers with this notation always have the "Weapon" keyword, which means you use them with a weapon of some kind. Usually they're Melee attack powers like say the fighter's Cleave power. So 1[W] means you roll 1 weapon die. If you were using a long sword (1d8 weapon die) then using Cleave you would roll 1d8 for damage when you hit. With Brute Strike (a 3[W] power) you would roll 3d8. Many at-will powers get better at high levels, so Cleave is a 2[W] power at 21st level. This is because you never replace your at-will powers, there are no "higher level" versions (you probably won't use them a ton at high level but you still have the same ones).

k thanks you i have a few more.

we made our characters i went with a eladrin war mage.

when we level up do we get stats or what idk what do to with that either.

The chart on page 29 of the PHB should help you out here. You gain a +1 to any 2 of your ability scores at level 4 and again at level 8. At level 11 you get +1 to all ability scores. You'll also get bonuses at higher levels too.

ok thank you again.

do you know any good places where i can order maps or do i make my own like get the tile thing and use dry erase marker?

we got player guide 1-3 but decided to stick to 1 for our first campaigns

our squad consist of

dragonborn fighter
elf ranger- bow
human warlord
eladrin wizard

Paizo do a dry erase flip mat as one of their gamemastery packs - fold up and portable. I can't remember who does vinyl mats - which are absolutely wonderful but more expensive and nothing like as portable. WoTC and Paizo both do their own sorts of predetermined maps and tiles.

There are a few good old website to buy that gear from or you can make your own.

You can use deskjet printers to print on acetate for grids.

And maybe buy a few sets of the dungeon tiles. Always handy.

I'd heartily recommend the Paizo flip mats, they do them with various terrain on them, or you can just get a double-sided clear mat. They fold flat, us-letter size, are more portable and easier to clean than the vinyl mats. (Gamemastery flip-mat)

The vinyl mat that I know of is made by Chessex I think. But be warned, only water-soluble ohp pens should be used on these, and the ink should not be left on the mat for long periods.

As an aside, for both OHP pens and dry erase ones, the red ink seems harder to remove so make sure you get it off asap. :)

Paizo also do a form of dungeon tiles, they're less flexible than dungeon-tiles, but they seem easier to use in many ways. The card is thinner than dungeon-tiles,
all the tiles are 5'x8', and they're only designed to create a few basic layouts. Again, these come from their Gamemastery range. (Gamemastery map pack)

Amazon list some of this stuff, but if you search on google you should be able to find other places too.

Personally I've had the best luck with the Chessex mats. They are good sized, so you are not too likely to run off the edge of the mat, they roll up so really they're not hard to store/transport (you can fold them, but eventually that will do them in). It is true you need to be careful to use the OHP style pens, but I've had some of the same mats for 20 years and if you scrub them off with a bit of soap and water now and then or even a bit of alcohol you can get most anything off. A little discoloration never really hurt anyone either ;) They are also way cheap compared to most other solutions. A $20 mat will cover all your needs. If you go for tile sets you'll probably have to spend $100 to have all you need for every occasion.

Personally I'm an anti-fan of tile sets anyway. I think half the problem with WotC adventures these days is the blind insistence that every encounter has to be done on their tiles. It just kills real creativity when putting together encounters. Nothing is nicer than a blank map, it could turn into anything.

Never tried the Paizo flip thingy, that might be a nice idea.

Honestly though, even if you just use some graph paper things will go OK. We used to just slap a few sheets of .25" ruled paper down and draw things out quick with a marker. It really doesn't have to be perfect as long as the players can tell what is what and who is where.

When I can't use a vinyl battlemap, I go to an office supply store and buy a graph paper flip chart. They're huge, handy and good for quick disposable maps.
