A bit of info, here. Things are happening in the southern hemisphere of the planet, so the frontier area, which is just south of the Gulf of Sorrows. Its only been the last hundred years or so that its been very inhabited (similar to North America in the so called Wild West), though the city of Remere on the coast of the Gulf has been there for about two hundred years. The Railway only reached Remere a few years ago, when it was deemed to be worth it financially.

It should also be noted that the Rail has been around for about a hundred years, but is a complete monopoly owned by the Nallim family of Clan Balleft in Morrakin. As such, it tends to be VERY expensive and not at all common to ride. Tolk, on the southernmost reaches of the frontier, only just finished building two seperate lines to it, due to the tremendous gold rush that was happening down there. (Not that that maters anymore...)
