I recall your disenchantment with D&D 3E, and was wondering if you had read the Gary Gygax Q & A thread in the general discussion board? When Gary mentions several perceived differences in the two games (1E and 3E), he mentions a loss of "the generic archtypes" of fantasy, among other things.

I have been following it. While the lack of archtypes isn't my main beef with 3e it can make it difficult to get a party that works as well assmbled. But my main gripes are other things.

Seriouly though may I suggest that you check out Hackmaster. I know you don't want to buy another game but stripped of the daffy bits HM is basically 2e revised and unlike regular 2e there are lots of people who want to play.

I think you will enjoy it.
