D&D General NPC help/ question regarding creating characters above 1st level.

I just went ahead and rolled up a whole party of 6. Just to try a few things.

I'm running them through a 3rd party OSR module "converted" to 3e. By converted, I mean I just swapped in 3e monsters/NPCs. The results were TOUGH combats, as the 2014 monsters are far tougher in most cases than 1e- which this is written for.

I wanted to try out Totem Warriors, Rune Knights, Arcane Tricksters, and Oath of the Ancients paladins. Also a conjurer, and a Life Cleric. And rather than create them AS 3rd level, I started them at first and ran em through a module I had sitting around. (cabin fever, lol)

So, I got the joy of doing everything "wrong" according to the internet and every grumpy grognard out there.

DM PC's? check!
Solo play? check!
1e treasure hoards with 5e characters? check! (we are rich, rich RICH!)
cheating on die rolls for the sake of not having combats last forever when the dice are trolling me? oh yeah.
thoroughly enjoying a fun pure ROLLplaying experience? Yup!

The module is so goofy, it HAS to be an April 1st joke. Seriously, the Inn where it starts has a random event table that includes being crop dusted by someone dropping an SBD behind your table, a drunk bully giving a random character titty twisters, etc. and the BBG is an evil halfling illusionist- who became evil after being laughed at for wanting to BE an illusionist, slaughtered the entire class at the academy, and returned home to start a slavery ring... He even wears a yellow smily face button on his tunic.

The topper? An arena in the dungeon called the Rock n Roll fight club. complete with house band- with a picture of a band of monsters in full KISS makeup (bassist with extra long tongue included), and named KILL.

Extensive reworking was done, just to flex my DM muscles. Turning it into a pretty epic scenario, including a prison break, and escorting the freed slaves through the dungeon- knowing that a snitch had heard their plans and ducked out to inform the boss. And finding the lost remains of the wife of the Baron that built the place (now a Ghost), so we could return them, and free their souls to depart. That last WAS in the OG module, but I tweaked it some, to remove some excessive cheese.

The epic battle with a Roper to clear the way to the hidden back enterance was a highlight so far. 6 2nd level characters vs a CR 5 Roper. Witch Bolt is a real low level Wizard's friend!

Rune Knights are fun! Who expects an ogre sized Dwarf to suddenly appear in the room? What the?? I see you ate your Wheaties this morning, eh?

Regarding starting gear, a 5th level PC will be perfectly fine with nothing more than the 1st level starting equipment.

Fancy equipment is more fun when it's earned, and 5e characters don't need anything more than that to do their job effectively.
