What's the pay rate for a ship's navigator (i.e. expert NPC class)? Is it per rank/per diem?

Hireling, trained 3 sp per day
Ship’s passage 1 sp per mile

For higher level NPCs, you'll probably want to take into consideration the table that increases cost by caster level.

So hiring a navigator to guide your ship should cost 3 sp/day, and maybe double that for a 3rd level expert.

i'd also add cost for a longer planned trip, and the navigator may also be expecting to be fed.

in addition bonuses, or extra pay for hazardous tasks may be factored in.

(ex: 2 day routine trip down river is much cheaper, than hunting down pirates at a base that's at least 3 weeks away.)

We're talking months of sailing, with a likely battle with a pirate ship in there. How much should combat pay jack up the cost?

Actually, the DMG says it may cost more for short term employment. Hirelings like long strings of guaranteed pay. And any extra costs for things such as danger can be negotiated down at least a little with Diplomacy.

Um just a point - the navigator is usually one of the top ranking officers on the ship second only to the captain. He's not going to be paid on the same rate as any other sailor and he'll quite likely ask for a share in any profits
