NPC's and CR

OK...again...no books in front of me here at work...

how does one figure CR of non monster NPC's? Specifically, take a L1 Warrior and a L1 Fighter. Are they the same CR? How about a L5 fighter and a L5 Warrior?? Could someone point me to the rules on this? Otherwise I'll just have to take the rest of the day off and research

NPC-type classes are measured at -1 CR. Ftr5 = CR 5, War5 = CR 4.

Unless 3.5 changed that (don't think it did).

What dcollins said (it's the same in 3.5). In practice, I'd say that the CR for a commoner should be 1/2 x its class levels (a Commoner20 with appropriate equipment is just about the same challenge as a Ftr10), while the other NPC classes function as about 3/4 x class levels (though the expert is not much tougher than the commoner).
