numbered spell levels pre-D&D (comics history question)

I vaguely remember numbered spell levels being mentioned in Roger Zelazny's Dilvish the Damned novel, which came out as a novel in 1982 but was a collection of previous Dilvish stories starting from the 60s (1965 being the oldest two). I remember Dilvish having learned something like 10th level apocalypse spells in Hell but nothing lower level. It has been a couple decades since I read it though. :)

It has been a very long time since I fiddled with kabbalah but I vaguely remmeber it having something like "levels."

Kabbalah has a concept of, for lack of a better way of putting it, levels of enlightenment, or levels of "soul consciousness". I think they are named, rather than numbered, though.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn also has a leveled structure, which descends from the Rosicrucians.

But those are all levels of the people, not the workings.
