[NWN] Getting the game to work on XP

I should post this on the bioware forums, but my CD key is at home, so I don't have an account there. I've scoured those boards looking for info, but haven't really found anything.

I was just curious if anyone here knows anything more than I concerning getting NWN to work with the following setup -

AMD XP 1800 machine w/XP
My sound card is a Turtle Beach Montego. I've been unable to download the latest drivers for it since I've miscplaced my CD key for it, so that's still outstanding, otherwise, I've download the latest OpenGL, and the latest patches for the game.

When I run the game, I get the black "eye" screen, and then nothing. "nwmain.exe" is listed in the process list, but the black "eye" screen goes away, and I get no error, or anything.

Anyone have any thoughts? It *used* to work on my previous machine before I upgraded. I'm going to keep plugging away it, but just looking for any advice. :)

You listed your processor and soundcard, but not your video card. This seems like it may be a video issue. I know it's not an XP issue because it plays great for me on XP.

Let us know what video card you have.

My problem when I first intalled was a video card problem and I would bet this is yours too. I would get the best possible you can afford. The game really speeds up and plays so much better for me now.

GeForce4 MX440 w/ 64 megs of RAM.

So, I don't think it's not having a good video card. :D

I downloaded the latest drivers for it, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I know others have had problems running it under XP, but I haven't been able to narrow down a specific *reason* why, but as you say, many are playing it under XP just fine.

If you feel that your XP settings are interfering with the game, run the "Compatibility Wizard" on the nwmain.exe and set it for Windows9x/Me settings.

I'm running NWN with a 667mhz processor, 192mb of ram and a TNT2 Vanta 16m PCI VGA card. I also have WinXP installed.

I haven't had a problem running the program.

One of the PCs I am running NWN on is a 1Ghz Celeron with a newly installed GeForce4 MX on Win XP & 384M SDRAM (system).

The other is a 1.5Ghz P4, GeForce4 Ti 4600 on Win XP with 1G SDRAM (system).

Both of these systems totally rock on NWN with no problems. The MX video card does not do shiney water but everything else is first rate.

You should dump the MX card and get a Geforce 3 TI or Geforce 4 TI , both perform better than MX. And the Geforce 4 TI is the real deal.
