Well, I would assume (not being too familiar with this FR novel reference) that some fiends have been around much longer than "pawnable" gods, who are likely, what, demi-gods who've only had their godhood for a couple hundred years or a bit more perhaps? Although, having read (well, and also owning) the Avatar trilogy, that series was a horrid attempt at "revitalizing" the Realms and injecting something new into it (and completely failing to cull off more than just a handful of some of the redundant gods in FR) while at the same time humanizing the future godlings to the the degree where, yes, we (IRL) can now empathise with the gods, which makes them seem to be more readily manipulated. That's the price we pay for a set of threee utterly redundant books: gods which don't seem so mysterious or powerful, just humans on godzilla pills :\

When I ran my 3 year long FR campaign, the whole thing took place in the Vilhon Reach. It was one of my best campaigns, only had to deal with a handful of the gods, no major uber-npc's to deal with except for the Emerald Enclave (which are really borderline villians). It was the most managable FR campaing I had ever delt with.
I completely agree with your statement here: each region has it owns distinct set of gods that you need to deal with. However, when you have cleric-boy from Mulhorand, a dwarf with his standard-issue axe from the North, a five-fingered credit card halfling from Waterdeep and pointy-ears from Evermeet, things start to get complicated. While I completely condone (and congradulate you!) on your 3-year-long D&D game, when you first crack open that FRCS, you see a whole front-loader worth of gods which are redundant.

Oh, and the Reach for the win! I love that area :D

Ny,

It's in reference to War of the Spider Queen. Although to be fair, no gods were actually killed. Just a little of "duck and cover" followed with "This makes no sense to me!" type deals.

Fair enough, but at least it wasn't a Carl Smithian module. Heh :D

And Shemmy - he amazes me with how much he knows about the realms. It's nutters!

Well, in Sacrifice of the Widow, she
Kills off half the drow pantheon: Selvetarm is definetly dead, and Vhaeraun may be also - though there several things indicating that he faked his death.
