I think the flavor is wonderful, but that it'd also be extremely world- and style-specific. In a 'standard' game, where, at 20th level, parties have easy access to resurrection-magics, the ability is outright worthless. In another style game, where such magic is rarer, if accessible at all, the ability is more useful - thought it still creates an NPC out of a PC. There's really no way around that - if they appear 1/season, for nine minutes, that's obviously not enough time to be used as a PC. If, instead, you possess an animal (I read that as though it's permanent; if not, then it could perhaps be clarified more,) you lose a full ten levels, instantly leaving you far, far weaker than your comrades, and likely unable to contribute in meaningful combat situations that would challenge the rest of the group. In any event, if you're running a world in which resurrection is rare, and after a death, even at high level, players create another character, it could lend a lot of flavor, especially if the player is allowed to control when this spirit shows up (in addition to his replacement PC.) As such, I like the concept enormously, but the execution is going to depend on a lot of different things.
