Occult Lore is Here!

First Post
I hold in my hands an actual, finished, lovingly crafted, hardcover-bound, deliciously thick and meaty copy of OCCULT LORE, the newest Penumbra release. It arrived this afternoon, at long last, and even as week speak it is on its way to distributors all over the globe via UPS. In the next week or two it should start appearing on game store shelves...

Whew! We shipped out most of the print run already today -- doesn't look like this first printing is going to last long. We're reserving some copies for each of the summer conventions, though, in case it does sell out quickly.

As part of an unofficial promotion of the book, I've been putting all-new (brand spanking, even!) magical concoctions derived from the plants in the OL appendix on my personal site. So far I've got:

Dragon's Doom, Hoof & Claw, Baird's Bug Breeze, Slaim Y Augur, Adelaide's Damnable Distraction, Brine of Submersion, Stinson's Nightdrake Soap and Glimmershim

These are still rough since they haven't had the benefit of Michelle's Red Pen of Editing applied to them, but they should work ok :) I may put more up later in the week if I have time.

I picked up Occult Lore on friday and have only been able to give it a quick read through, but I am impressed. I'd say the material is split about 50/50 in terms of use for a player or a DM. I have one player in my campaign who has wanted to play an elementalist for a while, and we both agreed that this books elementalist will be perfect for him.

I'm not entirely sold on the necessity of some of the new NPC classes, but I do like the new PC classes presented, especially the Astrologer, elementalist and the sympathetic mage. I especially like the flexability of the sympathetic mage, although it seems like it will require a bit more work that your average wizard or sorcerer.

I'd have to say that out of the many books I've purchased in recent months, this looks to be the most useful. The rules are clear, and cover a wide variety of magic. While I know I won't be using every chapter of this book, I've already started working the material on Astrology and dream magic (oneiromancy) into my campaign. And one of my players has often been interested in using herbs and various alchemical concoctions, which this book covers in great depth.

And I'm definitely finding a place for Carbolo, the hill giant introduced in the chapter on Geomancy.

I personally cannot recommend this book highly enough. I prefer it to Relics and Rituals. It has more content for the buck than Spells and Spellcraft (and I love that book). I place it up with the Kalamar Players guide in value (which is at the top for me).

Check this thing out. It is great for the roleplay aspects of Magick.

Yepper!

That is my game shop.

The best darn game shop I have ever found!

Do you know Billy?

Yeah -- in fact, I was talking on the phone with Billy yesterday, and he mentioned that one of his regulars had picked up Occult Lore last week and was ravingly happy with it. I thought it might be you. ;)

Merlin's Keep is a very nice shop. Michelle and I have visited it several times (my in-laws live in Madison) and really like it. The gaming loft area is pretty cool, and the atmosphere of the whole place is very cozy and inviting.
