I have a Holmes Basic still in shrinkwrap. Color and box quality are like new, so it's possible that's the real deal if it were kept out of sunlight.

I'd never seen one at all! I thought they were all in (brown) wooden boxes.

Out of the OD&D stuff, the only one I've ever seen in person (and just the cover, at a hobby store) was Eldritch Wizardry.

Actually, it's not that difficult to shrink wrap something yourself.
But the item would still have to be in pristine condition to sell that illusion.

I don't think the ORIGINAL original printing actually WAS in shrink.

That's probably the confusion.

It would not be hard for someone to put it in shrink later though.

It could be even if the original printing wasn't in shrink, later printings were shrink-wrapped.
