odd computer problem.

Ok, I've got a weird computer problem and I have no idea what to do about it.

The situation is this. My grandparents computer is evidently playing music at the same time every morning, but the computer is powered down. Now my assumption was it must be some sort of virus, but Nortons isn't finding anything, and I haven't been able to find any kind of reference online to anyone having a similar problem. They contacted Dell and after some back and forth Dell's solution was to unplug the computer at night, which worked but seems like a bit of a cop out.

Anyone have the slightest clue what this might be?

No clue.. but that is really wierd.

I don't know if you have access to the computer when it does this (short of unplugging it and bringing it to your place for the night) or if your grandparents are technically savvy enough... but when it is happening, is there any program running on screen or in the system tray?

(And while I don't know any answers, just some random questions that might hint at what it might be)

Also, is it the same music every time?

Is it "song" length? Or more like a program's theme in length (as long as the windows start up music, for example)

That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Some laptops have "media capabilities" that allow them to boot into a mode where they can play music and such, but it doesn't sound like they have a laptop.

One, are they ACTUALLY turning the computer off, or just pushing the power button on the monitor? Or maybe sleeping it? I'm betting it's not really off.

You can check the Scheduler in the Control Panel to see if there are any scheduled events.

Look at the things in the start menu and system tray and look for things like "Alarm" or "timer" or other things that might seem like they could trigger music when the computer is on. Also check add/remove programs.

What kind of music is it playing? Is it from speakers (that you could turn off or silence) or from the internal speaker?

It could be a virus, but that only be relevant if the computer was on and working (ie Windows was loaded).

What installed program was playing music? Is it in the Startup folder?

Is it music or a computer sound?

Does your grandparents know the proper way of shutting down the computer?

Does the PC have a separate Spyware program? (I use Norton for firewall and anti-virus; Spy Sweeper for spyware and malware.)
