OGC Spells Database [UPDATE: June 27, 2003]

The Sigil

Mr. 3000 (Words per post)
**UPDATE: June 27, 2003**
Added 19 new spells from Norse Gods by Bastion Press (thanks, Jim Butler!). :)

**UPDATE: June 8, 2003**

Added a separate listing for sorcerer spells, using the list given in Monte Cook's Book of Eldritch Might II as a jumping-off point (thanks, Monte, for permission to do so!). :)

**END UPDATE**

For those of you who have been curious about it, the OGC Spells Database on the web is open and ready to go. It's still under heavy construction, with more spells and more features to follow, but I invite you to check it out and give me feedback! :)

http://www.cooleys.org/ogc/spells/

Enjoy! And a special thanks to the publishers who have graciously granted me permission to re-use stuff from their products in this endeavor. Go buy their stuff (see Section 15 of the OGL for a given page to see who they are)! ;)

That's an awful lot of work, Sig. I see you've plundered some Mongoose sources. Are you adding in all of the spells from the Green Ronin Spell books, too? Are those 100% OGC? People won't have to puiblish books anymore, they can just send anything they wanted to open to you to distribute! :)

The other thing that would be nice is if there were a customizable printable list of a certain classes spells with just brief descriptions like in the PHB before the spell listings. R&R and other books do it, too, but it's difficult to extract spells for clerics and druids, especially, since there's so many of them. I end up typing them out and just putting the source after them. For wizards and others, just check the spells you have, and let the program arrange your spell list...

Thanks
Chris

Yes, the Green Ronin spell books are 100% OGC... BUT I am going to make an effort to "track down" the original publisher of a spell and ask for their blessing... as I mention on the site, I do not want to step on anybody's toes. I got specific permission from other publishers to use their stuff before I put it in here... and I have been told, "please don't add my material" by some... and I will respect that stance... so there is some stuff that won't be appearing in it for the conceivable future.

In other words, there is some material out there that COULD be in the database that WON'T be, at the request of the publisher. The OGL techincally allows me to do it anyway, regardless of what they want, but I think it's bad form to do it that way.

The goal of this database is not to "plunder" the works of others, cutting into potential profits and so forth, so much as to provide one central point on the web to find any OGC spell (a boon to the average d20 player) - and to find it with the proper - and shortest possible - Section 15 documentation (a boon to the d20 publisher).

Of course I hope that d20 publishers will see the utility of this sort of thing and hop on the bandwagon, but it should be their decision to make as to whether or not they want their stuff included... so all the stuff you see will be added on a "volunteer" basis by the publishers (I may do the actual data entry, but I want the go-ahead from the publisher before I add stuff). Kudos goes to those publishers who gave me the go-ahead to include their stuff, thereby allowing themselves (and their content) to be the "guinea pigs."

So if you have a product you want to submit, by all means, do so. If you know of a product you would like to see in it, let the publisher know.

And if you like this and want to see more of it, let it be known here on the boards and/or in little notes to your favorite publishers. :)

Sounds great! Drop me a line if you ever have any questions about using anything from CMG stuff! :)

I'll put that on my "to do" list, but it will be down there quite a ways - as it will require me adding another field with the shortened description.

Also, keep in mind that I am still learning how to do things in ASP, so my implementation may be a little clumsier than I might like... but keep the suggestions coming. I can't promise I'll be able to implement them quickly - or even at all, given my limited knowledge of ASP - but I will try to get them in at some point.

Glad to see your enthusiasm... I'll take a gander through my CMG material (I don't have all of it, but I have some) and let you know. And if you have anything you want to volunteer, just drop me an e-mail and I'll put it at the top of my "stuff to add to the database" list. :)

Sounds like this could become a hugely useful resource, especially if you add more search capabilities. FYI, Here are some searches I've needed to do in the past:

- What clerical spells have no somatic nor material (including divine focus) component? (Our party was captured and chained to a wall...)

- Which Adept spells are on the Wiz/Sor spell list, but not on the Cleric or Druid spell list? (Designing a Wizard's Guild for Mor's End... we wanted to force Adepts to join the Guild if they used these "arcane" spells.)

- Which spells can be reached sooner by Bards than by any other class?

Dunno if your planned online search engine could answer all (or even *any*) of these. A full database search obviously could. Anyway, these are just something to keep in mind... At the minimum, having the possibility to do further searches on previous search results would go a long way. (e.g.: search for all Adept spells -> search for those that are on the Wiz/Sor list -> subtract those that are on the Clr list -> etc.)

ASP...

Sigil,

I'm a web developer who writes in ASP on a daily basis. If you need any assistance or tips, feel free to email me. I'd be happy to help.

Dave
