OGC Spells Database [UPDATE: June 27, 2003]

Very cool resource! It's about time...

As a publisher, I'm all in favor of this. In fact, in terms of the competitive landscape, I enthusiastically endorse it.

Why? Because I would hate to see commercial OGL publishing reduced to simple repackagings of previous material. There are powerful incentives to do so -- free text (under the OGL), perhaps even paired with free (or re-used) artwork, means enormous potential profit margins.

If the same material is available online for free, the printed repackagings need to add more value in order to justify their non-free price tag. In a perfect world, there would be essentially no profit advantage in merely reprinting previous OGC. Adding more value in any form (production values, extra editing and development to assure quality, playtesting, whatever) costs more money. That, in turn, means that repackaging efforts have a budget more on a par with the publication of original material.

That means more original material in the market, and re-uses that add value rather than simply regurgitate, and that's all good.

Sigil, that's AWESOME!

I'll be using this resource constantly.

I'm not completely out to lunch when it comes to desiging databases so if you want some help or just somebody to bounce ideas off of, please let me know.

Brilliant.

People won't have to puiblish books anymore, they can just send anything they wanted to open to you to distribute! :)

Sounds better when John says it... :p

It sure does. ;-)

So, John, does that mean I have your approval to start dumping spells from "Occult Lore" into the database? ;)

I'll put that on my "to do" list, but it will be down there quite a ways - as it will require me adding another field with the shortened description.

Also, keep in mind that I am still learning how to do things in ASP, so my implementation may be a little clumsier than I might like... but keep the suggestions coming. I can't promise I'll be able to implement them quickly - or even at all, given my limited knowledge of ASP - but I will try to get them in at some point.

If you ever need it to be ported to PHP/MySQL drop me a line :)

*Linux servers are usually a *LOT* cheaper then Windows ones you know ;)

*bumping so I can find it more easily later*

I will soon have some questions for you ASP and PHP gurus... I just want the thread handy when I get them all written out.

Why not just build a query off of the Level column? Certainly faster, easier, and avoids redundancy.
