Oh boy: Kezef the Chaos Hound and I

First Post
Hey all,

I am going be facing a pretty big dog soon. Some might know him as Kezef the Chaos Hound and being a follower of Mask, my character has had one lucky encounter so far (that being lucky due to being saved by Mask...thank the DM :) ) However I have a funny feeling that this week, I will have to face the hound once again.

Now, the question is, obviously I can't beat Kezef if my characters God can't..so..... how do I avoid the encounter? How do I get out of the encounter if I don't avoid it to begin with? Is there a way I can slow down Kezef (I don't think protection from evil will help me much lol!).

Characterr:
Cleric of Mask
Level 16

Apart from the obvious Word of Recall, what can I do?

Any quick (serious lol) help would be appreciated. And no, I don't have HoundsBane :)

Thanks,

Al

I've never heard of Kezef the Chaos Hound. Some information about its abilities would help in suggesting strategies.

Kezef the Chaos Hound: Kezef is a unique being who roams the Outer Planes constantly hunting the Faithful, which are the souls of those who have chosen to venerate one god above all others. He has no taste for the Faithless or the False and is sickened by the taste of the unripened spirits of the still-living. When Kezef destroys one of the Faithful, the maggots that make up his pelt swarm away from his jet-boned skeleton to devour the corpse. The gorged creatures then mill slowly over Kezef’s body, making him appear bloated. Any of the Faithful who are eaten in this fashion are forever and truly destroyed, beyond even the recall of the gods.

The Ravager of the Heavens relishes the scent of hatred, and he sometimes pauses and becomes substantial so that he can savor a particularly juicy emotional scent. In his wake, he leaves screaming nightmares particularly cherished by Dendar the Night Serpent. He is nauseated by the scent of cloying, reckless happiness.

Kezef appears as a huge mastiff with unearthly malevolent, red eyes and a ratty tail. Maggots teem in his fur, which makes the coat shift incessantly over barely covered sinews and bones. His flesh oozes like pus from an old sore, and his paws leave burning prints in the ground that spread into pools of burning ichor in his wake. Pointed teeth glitter like daggers of jet in the light. His blood is a dark, corrosive, liquid ooze, and he radiates a pestilent aura of decay. The fetid air of his breath extinguishes all nearby fires, and he reeks with the sweet stench of ancient death. Those with a sense of smell can catch this scent from many miles away. The Chaos Hound speaks in a low and rumbling growl.

Kezef was imprisoned for centuries amid the Barrens of Doom and Despair by an alliance of Faerûnian gods when the Circle of Greater Powers forbade traffic by deity or mortal with the beast. After he was hunted down, the powers bet Kezef he could not break a leash forged by Gond the Wonderbringer. Kezef allowed Gond to place a short length of sturdy chain around his neck in exchange for Tyr placing his right hand in the Chaos Hound’s slavering jaws. Gond anchored the chain miles deep in the floor of the Barrens’ caves, and Mystra wrapped the beast in an unbreakable, glowing curtain of magical energy that automatically repaired itself. From these two traps Kezef could not escape, and no one could reach him. When Kezef discovered he was truly fettered, he bit off Tyr’s hand and feasted on its divine essence for centuries as he strove to free himself. Kezef was eventually freed, by Cyric’s machinations, to once again hunt the souls of mortals and gods alike.

Kezef's 3.5 stats are found in Champions of Ruin, page 145. In short, an outsider with 28 HD, AC in the low 30's, three attacks in a full attack action (attack bonuses in the mid 30's), non-epic DR & some other special attacks & qualities.

If your DM is sending it against you (&/or rest of the party) at that level, then he either wants to end the campaign ('cause either you die, or it's a fitting end to a campaign if you beat it), or wants you to run or outsmart it (it has an Int of 15).

Step one: You're in tight with Mask. You're a cleric of his, and as such he's your buddy. Mask is a pretty slick customer and I'd venture to say willing to forgive a little double dealing particularly if it's clever and/or amusing. Step one? Renounce your faith. Start praying to all manner of gods instead of just Mask, swear off the whole divine business because of how all gods are bastards and cause more trouble than they're worth, something. Your goal is to convince that dog that you're no longer suitable as a meal. You are (or.. were) a priest of Mask - let's hope you're a good liar.

Step two: Get happy. Like -really- happy. Hell, chemically or magically induce your happiness. Seriously. Kezef hates the smell of joy.

According to the description, it looks like he only goes after the souls of the dead. As long as you are alive, you should be fine, since your soul is "unripened" and therefore not tasty.

If you happen to be dead, get yourself a true res or equivalent.

Thanks for the replies guys! (or girls..or both..sorry :) )

Alright, lets go. The really happy part, I would stand to agree..however, Just cause it don't like happy people doesn't mean i'm not dead meat just to have made him enjoy his supper a little less :) and it doesn't protect the other players aswell :) (Although from mask, i don't think that is a huge problem..as long as there is profit or deceit lol!)

As for the Dead only part...i really don't think so. I think that it is more like it kills you then takes your soul Permanently. Otherwise it wouldn't hunt down gods and followers alike. And with an inteligence of 8, my skill points are near Nill for the bluffing...lol.

I think the DM is trying to say "outsmart him" and even as a player, my int isn't so high..but my character has a Wis of high 20s so its not so bad. So how would we outsmart a Big dog like that? Illusions don't really work, nor invisibility etc... I can only think of word of recall to come to aid... any other thoughts?

thanks to all so far!!!

Al

This is BS, its nearly copied word from word from norse mythology.
