Oh, those crazy gamers!

I have a serious question. Please allow me to preface by explicitly stating that I am serious, no snark is intended or desired. That being said...

Why is this funny? I watched this entire video without so much as cracking a smile. I play D&D and I played World of Warcraft a few years ago. Am I just not in on a common gamer meme, do I just not get it? Or do I just have no sense of humor?
It didn't make me laugh either. And the bubble-gum pop music beat isn't interesting to me.

I thought The Guild was OK (I've only seen season 1), but it didn't have the same effect on me, likely because I don't play WoW.

I did play WoW for a while, and I still don't get it. I'm feeling more and more of a disconnect from the "gaming community" of late, but that's really a topic for a different thread. Really, I'm just trying to understand this sense of humor and I'm just not getting it. Maybe I should watch some of their other material and come back to it.

Never heard of this Guild of which folks speak.

As to (presumably somewhat rhetorical) question of why the video is funny: Why is it funny? It's tapping into a sub-culture and making fun of a fairly silly aspect of that sub-culture. To whit: pseudo-dating between pseudo-people as a means of cathartic release for people who presumably aren't getting any real dates. And even if they are getting real dates the perception is that they aren't and it's the perception that's important. (I only put the previous sentence in to stop the flood of 'I WoW and I get real dates!' responses that would happen otherwise. It's a disclaimer for morons.)

Now if you don't find the video funny that's OK. Really it is. Cos as jokes go the ones that rely on nothing more than pointing at one little facet of one little subculture and saying "see this, this is odd" over and over again are not very good. It'll probably make her millions.

I found it mildly funny. Well, I didn't laugh out loud. But I smiled a bit. One verse and a chorus in and I looked for the off button. How does one stop those damn things playing anyway?

And you know how jokes seem to lose their funny when you have to explain them? I've just taken myself into negative funny. I shall cure myself by listening to some Tom Lehrer. And maybe :):):):):):):) and Cows With Guns, 2 of my favourite novelty songs.

cheers

The Guild is such a strange series -- I have met too many of these people to be 100% comfortable watching it, but I still find myself giggling constantly.

Great video :D
A friend of mine felt bad about himself after watching the first episodes or so of The Guild. Not that he is anywhere close to the characters/caricatures of The Guild, especially since he has given up WoW years ago...

I didn't realize that people actually engaged in "avatar dating" until I discovered this phenomenon literally moments ago through the power of google. So now my Knowledge (internet) has increased, although my pity for a certain segment of the population has actually decreased. I didn't realize that there was actually a big enough singles market amongst World of Warcraft players to sustain a dating site specifically for them (datecraft.com).

I get it now. Thanks!

Life is an unfair gamemaster.
For succeeding a research check, you take a moral penalty to interaction rolls.

Huh, I played EQ when it first came out for a few months and haven't touched an MMO since, and I thought it was pretty funny. I even posted it on Facebook, adding that I'm not an MMOer but found it funny for all those friends that are the same, with the response I expected.

As for the Guild, it's bloody hilarious. The same way Knights of the Dinner Table is funny. Self-depreciating? Yup, but if you can't laugh at yourself...I attended a Weird Al Yankovic concert once and there was a very morbidly obese person in the audience. Now that guy's got a sense of humor (Al makes fun of everyone, but he's got more fat songs than anything else). :)
