I need to put together a decent list of firearm stats for N.O.W. and I could use some help!

Here are the parameters:

Any firearm, pistol, rifle, etc. you would expect in a setting from the 1800s to near future (but not lasers). Plus other ordnance, inc. Gatling guns, RPG launchers, rail guns, flame throwers, and so on.

Name - weapon name

Damage - in d6 only, typically 1d6-4d5. 1d6 would be unusually low, 2d6 most pistols, 3d6 most rifles, 4d6 for unusually high damage. (As a comparison, a laser rifle in N.E.W. does 3d6 heat damage)

Ammo - typical amount before reloading

Range - in 5' squares, five range increments being typically max (so range would be typical max range/5 squares)

Size - S/M/L. Pistols typically S, rifles M, RPH launchers L.

Weight - in lbs.

Cost - in US $.

Special - any special effects. These are especially relevant: auto (which makes it great for covering fire etc), sidearm, heavy (for big stuff), misfire (for old unreliable stuff).

Notes - a couple of sentences of description, what it looks like, rarity, who typically uses it, etc.

[/TD] [/TR] [/TABLE] I have a big question here though, and it's amplified by the firearm factor: what's damage? Is it bodily destruction by cubic centimeter, number of bullets fired, size of a bullet, or as I like to call it, onset-of-death? The definition could mean that the 240 does about 5 times as much damage as a 16, or that the AN-94 does twice as much damage as the M4.
 

Damage is four very broad ranges (1d6, 2d6, 3d6, 4d6). It's kinda "ability to kill you in a round" and some of it comes from the ability of the attacker. The very biggest weapons (such as a grenade going off in your pocket or a rocket launcher) do 4d6, which is enough to kill most normal people easily (heroes and the like have more HEALTH, but a lot of that's luck and heroism: Indiana Jones doesn't get killed by an atomic bomb, for example).

Normal weaponry won't go above 4d6. A phaser rifle from the far future does 3d6 heat damage, while a heavy gatling polaron gun does 4d6. Generally, in contemporary terms, a pistol will do 2d6, a rifle 3d6, and heavy weaponry 4d6, though there is some variation in that.

It has hundreds of weapons, with damage ratings for seven different game systems. At least three of them (Cyberpunk, Hero, MSPE) use d6's for damage. Used copies are available starting at $3.99.

The more I think about this, the harder the project becomes.

#1: I'm realizing the that the sort of ranges I'm putting on the rifles is too high for a standard rifle. The effective range on a weapon depends a lot on the sort of sights you have. A rifle with simple iron sights might have an effective range as low as say 24, where as the same rifle with a high power scope, the effective range might increase to two or three times that provided you have a skilled user. With certain high tech features, it might well be four times that. Tell me about how scopes interact with your rules.

#2: I don't find your 4 damage ratings particularly granular. As I'm think about them right now, the basically break down like this:

1d6: Low caliber short barreled weapons
2d6: high caliber short barreled weapons, low caliber long barreled weapons
3d6: high caliber long barreled weapons
4d6: small cannons (12mm and up)

However, there is a significant difference in punching power between a .22 and a 9mm and 9mm and a .45 and a .45 and a .44 Magnum. So at the low end, a .22 or a .25 handgun is clearly a 1d6 and a .44 Magnum or a M4 Carbine is clearly a 2d6. But where to categorize .38's, 9mm, and .45 handguns I'm not sure. I'd like write something like 1d6+1, 1d6+2, and 2d6-1, or "1d6 and reroll 1's and 2's". (Or if you had multiple dice, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10). On the high end, 4d6 hardly seems to capture the difference between a 12.7mm, 20mm and 30mm weapon. If getting hit by a 20mm AP shell is clearly 4d6, what is a .50 cal 12.7mm shell? Clearly much more than the 3d6 of a .30-06, but equally much less than a 20mm cannon. And what's a 30mm?

#3: Do you already have standard rules for shotguns? How much damage they do and how they behave is very much a function of the ammunition.
