D&D 4E Ok to have an opinion about 4E?

It would be nice if people where only saying you've not got enough information to make that statement against 4th ed only in cases where the postrs are rampant speculation. Unfortunately this is often not the case. A lot of people also fail to grasp that just because the information being released claims something doesn't mean its not open to interpretation on how whats stated will actually achieve the stated goal. Like the OP I see a lot of posts that outright dismiss negartive views on 4th ed as lacking sufficient basis and a lot less that do it on posirtive opinions but little difference in many cases of the basis for the opinion in whats stated by Wizards or logic to how its interpreted. And regardless of my own opinions its sad and annoying to see a double standard accepted and frequently applied.

There's no doubt that design & development is paying attention to us. So, I also have no doubt that ENWorld will have an influence on 4e. Perhaps only subtle. Perhaps not anything intentional. But an influence none-the-less.

Indeed, I'd hazard that it has already had an influence. No doubt they started paying attention prior to the 4e announcement.

I'd also point out that we come here to discuss the hobby with our fellow hobbyists. It is only natural that 4e & any information about it would prompt discussions among us. None of the discussions here--despite what they may even claim themselves--really counts as "opinions of 4e" to me.

In my opinion, it's one thing to say "I don't like the changes they've made to demons and devils" and quite another to say "I don't like how skills may be working in 4e."

One is more informed, the other is more drawing conclusions that just don't have enough facts there yet.

That's what people kept telling me about the Book of Vile Darkness, which even after the book was released and I saw it I still knew it was crap.

Warning, hijacK

Wow. I love that book.

It is one of the few non-core 3E books that I liked so much looking through a friend's copy, that I ordered my own - and have gotten great use out of it.

You're allowed to have an opinion about 4e - as long as it's against every fluff decision WotC has thus far made. Otherwise you are a sheep, WotC Toady, or yes-man, only interested in playing crass emo tieflings. Go play Exalted, anime boy.

For some reason, every time someone mentions even the slightest bit of negativity or uncertainty about 4th Edition, someone else or multiple somone elses chimes in with a comment saying or inferring that the speaker is a stupid jerk who's only venting and has no relevant point worth considering. It's grating to see such responses so frequently by EN Worlders. :\ :(

Actually, I see lots of people posting fairly reasonable opinions about how they don't like thing X or Y about 4E, and they don't get jumped all over. The people who get smacked around are the ones who come on here to tell us about their hat of 4E, its limit, or lack thereof.

I detect some negativity in your post, Citizen.

Would you like to schedule a termination appointment with The Computer, or would you prefer to be surprised?

Your Friend, -- N

With all due respect, I disagree.

I've seen a number of substantive and reasonable concerns about 4e, be they mechanical issues or simple differences of taste.

However, a minority of posts are just negative screeds of the 'nerd rage' variety. Much of the name-calling, insults, and passive-aggressive behavior I see are the bitter fruits of these posts.

Remember, this is a hobby, and a passion for a lot of people. With passion comes emotional responses that, if people stopped and thought about it, would probably not be made. (And yes, I include myself in this.)

All of us have an emotional investment (in varying degrees) in D&D. Since we know so little at this point, all we have is mental buy-in (or not) to go by. Logic and reasonable thought processes may not apply at this time. (And, granted, they may never apply in some cases.) It's all feeling/hunches/passion/whatever.

The best thing we could all do (which we won't :) ) is to ignore 4e until it's out and then discuss the merits at that time. (Unless, of course, you are a playtester or publisher.)
