I prefer going the Pathfinder way, with skills. Or something along those lines, at least. I use point buy (M&M) now, so it doesn't really apply to me either way, but if I was still running a more standard d20 type game, I'd prefer the emphasis to be less, when it comes to the choices for level 1. Not just with skills, in fact.
I like more difference in BAB, saves, etc. by 'class type' over however many levels, mind you.
