I cannot for the life of me understand why they removed the potion of longevity from the game. It is such a staple of fantasy, IMO. The aged wizard trying to cheat death in various ways.

Best I can figure (I've wondered the same) is the problems it creates with the aging rules. Does it reverse the ability drain for physical stats? Do you still retain the ability bonuses for mental stats? Does it affect each race by the same amount of years (thus less useful for certain choices), or are its effects proportionate to the normal aging process of each race?

Since potions contain only up to 3rd level spells, what spell effect would create a potion of longevity? Should it be an elixir instead?

That, plus the general removal of aging effects (ghost's touch, staff of withering, etc.) lead me to believe they just didn't want to deal with it.

Frankly, my solution is to allow it back in the game, as an elixir (using the temporal stasis spell), and to remove the whole ability score bonus/penalty for aging notion from the game; it's one that never seems to be applied to official NPCs in any case, so why should it apply to PCs? (Not to mention that, due to the varying age rates, the only ones likely to be affected by them are human PCs anyway, which seems unfairly penalizing them). Also, allow aging effects and abilities back into the game (ghosts get their aging touch back! Yay!)

oh man, i really wanted to convert some of this stuff for a Dragon article. i made a big list somewhere, but ATM i have no idea where that is.

The problem with sharpness wasn't that it was too random, it's that no good rules exist (strangely) for what happens to someone missing a limb. Any time you see a rule for it, it's contradicted somewhere else.
