Old School Oriental Adventures?

When I read the Oriental Adventures put out in conjunction by WOTC and AEG, I miss the old school stuff. I read the Initiate Brother / Gatherer of Clouds duology and the Daughter of Empire / Servant of Empire / Mistress of Empire trilogy, and I wish to have families such as the Shonto, the Komawara, the Butto, the Acoma, and the Shinzawei. The Dragon, the Phoenix, and the others just don't hold as much appeal for me.

Maybe if I had read the series of books covering the Clans. Maybe if I played L5R, either the original RPG or the card game. But I haven't.

So, has anyone tried to adapt OA to fit this form of setting?

I have read the daughter of the empire trilogy and also some of the L5R stuff and I don't see that big of difference the clans in L5R are ultimately controlled by a single family and warlord as was done in the trilogy and all are loosely ruled by the emporer who is also something of a figurehead but at the same time the ultimate ruler.

Also in both worlds politics are is game.Typical oriental stuff I would say.

Well, just like regular D&D, if you have a specific setting in mind, it might take a little work to make fit. I feel OA would have been a stronger book had it been more general, but I think large parts of it are useful for a variety of games.

Actually, it varied from Clan to Clan (in Fiest's trilogy). In some clans, the houses and families were very closely bonded together. In other clans, there were blood feuds between each other.

Just my understanding, mind you. I haven't re-read the intra-clan conflicts portion yet.

Your right the various families within the clans played politics with each other as well sometimes. The families in L5R don't always get along either.

I thought the families within the Clans (L5R) had pretty much sorted themselves out to which Clan best suited their tendencies?

Ah well. There's still a lot of L5R that's salvageable. :)

Actually Hong I always thought at Kara-tur was more pseudo-'Asian' than straight pseudo-Japanese.
The whole limitation of the Rokugan setting is what steered me away from it whereas Kara-Tur was rich with its Chinese/Japanese/Indonesian flavournoids and let you really explore the full gamut of the Legend of Monkey Magic!!!

Came from a rock on a mountain top....:P
