On a Horse With No Name

Nytmare

David Jose
I am in the process of putting together an online exploration game and am looking for research materials.

Anyone know where there might be some numbers to crunch, or mechanics to swipe that involve walking around and exploring a desert?

Travel, water consumption, resource gathering, mounts. Pretty much anything at this point.

You might be able to find some RW survival guides from organizations like the BSA, military or some such. Watching episodes of Man vs Wild or Survivorman may also help.

The 3.5Ed supplement Sandstorm and the 2Ed Wilderness Survival Guide have some info, as might sourcebooks for Athas (aka DarkSun).

How in the hell did I forget about the Wilderness Survival Guide?

Someone is getting some XP once I clear the pipes.

Yes. Thank you Frank, we all got the reference.

I'll second the recommendation for the 3.5 edition environment book Sandstorm that was all about deserts. And... uh... (really, I'm not making this up) desert-like rooms in dungeons.

In general, I found the environment books to be disappointing. Took a great idea and made it somewhat insipid and silly. But there's plenty of numbers to crunch in there. And you might be able to pick them up fairly cheap.
