On a post-apocalyptic world: What’s the coolest thing that could happen next?

I'm gearing up to run a short senario and have some fun with D20Future stuff.

Here is what I'm going to tell the PCs (who will all be level 7),
PL 7

You, the PCs, own and operate a small ship on a minimalist crew.

At one point or another, you paid the Earth Government a large sum of money to use one of their Jump Gate from Earth's Solar System to another distant one.

During your Jump, the fusion reactor creating the magnetic forces used by the Jump gate failed, and your ship popped back into real space in one of those "wrong place at the wrong time" situations.

Struck by a fairly large meteoroid, Your ship started to decompress. Through the respective skill of the crew onboard, and a lot of luck(read: action points) you managed do a quick on the fly patch job, and land the ship on the closest planet.

Your ship locates you in the Star System Orpheus, and notes its discovery 2587. The physical and biological survey, completed by the UA2 (Universal Astronomy Association) in 2594 classified all four of its planet as Class 2C; Able to support life, should it be introduced to the system.

In the year 2601 the Iliad Corporate Conglomerate (ICC) bought exclusive rights to develop any body encircling the system's class F green star, and dubbed each of its four planets Orpheus I - IV.

The year is currently 3225, and you are currently on Orpheus III. Your crew intact, but integral ship parts badly damaged.

Your sensors detect the existence of radio signals on the planet, and their are signs of life, but you are still in the middle of the desert.

This idea just sort of popped up on the fly, so parts of it are a little sketchy, and the PCs are going to come up with the history leading them up to the jump gate part, as well as what kind of stuff they have on their ship and so on.

I'm just wondering what you guys think the "coolest" possible thing to do for this 2-3 session scenario on a crazy desert world.

I'm thinking along the lines of lots of mutations, and maybe some sort of abandoned ICC lab or something.

Thoughts?

One continent is now inhabited by Moreaux of various animal legacies, each of them with their own culture and society. These societies all of an almost medieval level, are currently engaged into a crusade to conquer the Holy City. Of course, the latter was built by the ICC six centuries ago. It is now considered a sanctified place, like the tomb of the originator gods or something. Of course, the PC must enter the place, despite the faction currently holding it, and desacrate the place in salvaging parts to repair their own starship (which is miles away in the Desert, so bringing the salvaged parts won't be easy).

I really like this idea. But who says it has to be "abandoned"? Maybe the Moreaus are part of a "super-soldier" program. The differenet animal nations are each (unknowlingly) backed by a different research group. Each is competing for the "prize" of genegineering the best warrior race for future sale. Or it started out like that and now has become an Everquest-like game for the resaech teams. Each trying to have its nation of animal Moreaus "win" without the race detecting the reseachers... the party would be an unwelcomed intrusion into the researcher "game". The party might help set them all free or end up on the dinner plate...

Have to planet ruled by damn dirty apes! :p
