D&D (2024) On Feats & ASIs

CreamCloud0

One day, I hope to actually play DnD.
I thought about that, and there’s a certain elegance to it, but ultimately, I find it unsatisfying. If we’re going to give bonuses, then it should be a bonus for some thing. Otherwise don’t call it a bonus, it’s just another attribute point. And face it I’d rather have a bonus even if it all adds up the same.
i feel like it's damned if you do damned if you don't, if they're fixed to certian stats by what the bonus giving thing is associated/flavoured with be that species, class or background then you're going to have people crying out about 'oh no i can't optimise my character exactly how i want them' and how there are 'optimal builds which dominate play and stifle creativity' but if they're free floating then what's the point of having them associated with anything at all just stick them directly into the point buy/standard array/stat rolling mechanics
