Legend
A group of Modron researchers visiting the prime material plane wanted to conduct a series of physical and psychological experiments upon humanoids, to better understand their irrational nature - but their initial test subjects proved insufficiently durable for the test regimen.
Rather than cause themselves trouble by attempting to capture more subjects, they decide the simplest option is to construct replica humanoids using their knowledge of golems and similar constructs.
They create what they believe to be perfect construct replicas of humanoids, physically enhanced to withstand more punishment, and spend the next few years building hundreds, then thousands more, conducting experiments upon them, yielding disappointingly inconclusive results, then return to their home plane, leaving the constructs behind.
Eventually the constructs break out of the abandoned test facility, finding themselves in an unfamiliar land. Traumatised by years of gruelling experiments and with no racial identity of their own, they must somehow try to find a place for themselves in the world.
