Once Upon A Time

This has to be one of the dumbest concepts for a TV show ever in the history of TV.

And yet, I can't help myself and like it. I also can't explain why I like it. Maybe it just appeals to the child in me and the sense of wonder and hope that I used to have before I watched Bambi and had my heart torn out and my soul destroyed by that horror-story. Maybe I want that sense of wonder and hope back?

I don't know, but I'm guessing this TV series won't make it past the first season unless it also appeals to people like it does to me. Here's hoping...

Have you ever considered not being so negative all the time? Even when you take a break from complaining to talk about something you like, you manage to make an insult out of it.

Yeah, well, every TV concept is dumb, if you look at just the concept.

It was good enough for my wife and I agree to watch a couple more episodes, and see where it goes. If they continue to do that, it'll last.

I'm going to give it a chance as well. The three female leads are appealing & attractive - Emma Swan, Snow White & the Evil Queen.

And, I'm sure the concept of Lost wouldn't have seemed very interesting/normal at first, either. But, that ended up being a pretty long running show.

My wife and I enjoyed the show. The premise of it was interesting enough and I thought the writing is better than some other shows that have been on for years.

The concept IS dumb.

The concept ("the gods/myths/legends/faries/whatever live silently among us") is largely the same as most urban fantasy to date, as well as any number of fantasy works. It's also at the root of the comic series "Fables", which has to date won over a dozen Eisner awards.

So, dumb concept does not really bear on how good the execution is.

I didn't say it was badly executed.

"Snow White & Prince Charming have a daughter who escapes a curse by the Evil Queen and is destined to undo the curse twenty-eight years later by returning to a township where all the fairy-tales are true and all the characters from the fairy-tales have forgotten their lives, and had their happy-endings taken from them."

Even amongst geeks, you give them that synopsis and they're going to be, "Erm... ok, I guess."

I'm not saying it's a bad show. I enjoyed it. I especially loved the Rumpelstiltskin moments and the last scene with the clock ticking was priceless. I'm a great believer in story having a structure that when conveyed well can draw in the audience. And that's what they did. They had an utterly ridiculous concept and yet through telling their story in a masterful fashion, allowed the viewer (that's me!) to suspend their disbelief and be drawn into the tale.

It's still a dumb concept, though, no matter how much I like or enjoy the show.

I liked it, but I am unsure if it will be the next lost, or the next...um you know that show 3 seasons ago..

I guess in my depressed state, the idea of the real world being hell, becuse you have no happly ever after here...
