Once Upon A Time

Once delivered 12.8 million viewers and a 3.9 adults 18-49 rating, improving a whopping 86 percent on the usual time period average of Extreme Makeover in the slot. That makes Once Upon a Time the highest-rated new drama series premiere of the season — bigger than ABC’s Revenge, CBS’ Person of Interest or Fox’s Terra Nova.

Be interesting to see if the second episode is as strong. If so, then I'd say there's a good chance at a second season.

That was a different project that didn't go very far.

Once Upon a Time Writers Talk Fables Comparisons - TV News at IGN
Well, it went far enough to become Once Upon a Time.

I'm not sure what one can take from the article to actually disprove that one project had nothing to do with the other, and given the extreme similarity I'd say common sense dictates that the burden of proof lies with someone trying to dismiss the connection. Indeed, the glib response given to the question of the matter seems rather evasive.

Given Willingham's personality, he may likely offer something to say on the topic...unless in it's his interest not to.

So, guilty until proven innocent?

The connection? Having looked at one option, ABC realized that people have an appetite for old stories spun into the modern world? Having fairy tales (or old gods, or mythological monsters) in the modern world is by no means a new idea - the urban fantasy folks have been playing with this for decades, you know. It was not new with Fables! Fables is a really good version of the concept, and several of the detailed approaches were new and interesting, but the general idea was by no means original.

And remember, as copyright goes, general ideas aren't protected. Only specific artistic expressions of those ideas.

So, when the first take ABC tried on it didn't pan out (for whatever reason), they looked for another. This is somehow improper?

One thing I don't get about the article is that it makes references to Disney approving them to go for different takes on characters such as Snow White.

But Snow White *predates* the creation of Disney Corp....so how can they approve what she's like? She's not their character. At least, that's my understanding. She's from the Brothers Grimm, isn't she? And other characters such as Rumplestiltskin, Pinocchio, Little Red Riding Hood, The Swan Princess, The Little Mermaid, Hansel and Gretel, etc. etc. etc....none of them were created by Disney.

Unless what they were trying to say is that the show is *by* Disney, and they've got a take on those characters, and they had to get permission to move beyond Disney's take on those characters.

I felt the second episode was fairly strong...and there were some rather humorous conflicts as well.

I'm interested to see where they take this show.

Agree - Starting to get behind the evil queen, think she has been missing being "evil" and had just started to be mean. With Emma on hand, she is starting to have fun. ;) Which MAY have been her happiness and showing she was also part of the curse.

Loved the scene of Emma and the Apple tree.

That *was* awesome....:)

The whole "have an apple" red herring has been thrown out a few times. I wonder if there's anything to it? Are the apples poisoned? Or, since they lost their memories, does she just have an affinity for apples?

I *do* think we're seeing the evilness of the queen. I mean, she did something really nasty to someone very close to her. That's pretty much the epitome of evil.

I liked the shout out to Malificent. That was funny.

I wonder if this show draws any inspiration from the Longest Journey? Like, maybe Emma et al will end up, at some point, going back to Faerie, or Never Never Land or whatever?

And I wonder how many characters/creatures we'll see? Humpty Dumpty? The old lady who lived in a shoe? Little miss muffet?

I could imagine some kind of season ending cliffhanger where the mayor becomes aware of her alternate persona....maybe season ends with her looking into that mirror in her house, and the face of the magic mirror appears, asking her what to do next....cut to black and "to be continued"...

We've already seen the real world translation of the Mirror, and it's the tabloid editor of "The Mirror"! He was the guy who the Queen/Mayor threatened, "Do you know what I do with things that are useless to me? I throw them away!"
