Good question. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the latter.

This episode was pretty good. I am looking forward to the next.

We've already seen the real world translation of the Mirror, and it's the tabloid editor of "The Mirror"! He was the guy who the Queen/Mayor threatened, "Do you know what I do with things that are useless to me? I throw them away!"

And the ratings are in for the second episode. They held firm, meaning it's highly likely that the show will get a second season.

Second episode ratings don't have much impact on determining if a show will get a second season (which won't be decided until pretty close to the end of the season). They have a lot of impact on whether or not it will get cancelled during its first season.

One thing I don't get about the article is that it makes references to Disney approving them to go for different takes on characters such as Snow White.

But Snow White *predates* the creation of Disney Corp....so how can they approve what she's like?

You're looking at it from the wrong direction. Disney doesn't own Snow White... but they do own* ABC. Of course, any idea that might step on the toes of their parent company is going to be run by them.

* Technically, ABC is owned by a parent company, ABC Inc., which is owned by Disney.

Unless what they were trying to say is that the show is *by* Disney, and they've got a take on those characters, and they had to get permission to move beyond Disney's take on those characters.

In addition to what LightPheonix mentions, in some cases, the characters are by Disney. Disney does not own the Talking Cricket, but they do own Jimny Cricket, who is named such in the first episode. They don't own the seven dwarves, but they do own "Sneezy," "Grumpy" and "Doc". If they have a character that's one of the seven dwarves, and really surly, or a physician, they'd probably have to defer to Disney, even if it weren't the parent company.

Having watched this show a bit, and having read some of Fables, it is pretty clear to me why ABC left off using Fables ideas, and developed their own. Fables is... well, a lot darker. While it looks like they're willing to go for some psychological complexity and some darkness at least in the villains, I expect Fables was just too dark for a company that has made so much money polishing up the old stories.

Snow White, by that name, is centuries older than copyright law, as such. She's quite solidly public domain. Disney has rights to their particular version of Snow White - the places where she differs from the folktales.
