1e might be bringing back the non-human races as classes. Yeah, it sticks the elf as a fighter/wizard or the halfling as a fighter/thief but I always liked it and cannot think of much else to being in from that edition that would be of great value.
1e didn't do that, the parallel D&D did (Red Box?).
This has kind of been my approach to the whole game. I started playing white box and the game has slid through the editions (Up to 3), grabbing a rule, changing a thing until I have the game I currently play. What I call MD&D. The same game world we started with in 1976.
1st was the current class structure.
2nd was the method thief abilities are handled.
My 3e would be the entire d20 structure, which I did.
