One-level-only multiclassing

At higher levels, it becomes powerful again. Especially with all of those feats, extra PPs to blow, and you target an obviously weak ability score. (Strength for mages/Charisma for fighters etc...)

Perhaps if you use point buy. I use the organic method from the DMG. Wizards don't always have 8 STR and 8 CHA. Still, do you really prefer doing an ego whip (or whatever) over a mass domination (yeah, I know, just an example - just use any sane-to-take-as-first-pick 7th level power)? I don't think so. Powers are always better to use than Combat Modes, with the exception of mind blast. Especially if you use Schism.

(edit: btw, sorry, this does seem like a high-jack, but I don't think it'll last long. Still, it's somewhat relevant to the viability of 1 level psion multiclassing)

*shameless plug* I attempted to fix this by combining the Ranger and Barbarian classes. Check the House Rules section for my work */shameless plug*

*shameless plug* Possibly inspired by Plane Sailings combination of these two classes? /*shameless plug*

Actually, definitely inspired by Plane Sailing's combination of these two classes. I even gave you credit at the very beginning of my house rule thread. Why don't you check it out? Tell me what you think, oh wise one... ;)

Why don't you provide everyone with a link... I am lazy. :)

I wasn't talking versus the party, more versus the bad guys. We happen to have a psion in our group who is quite fond of Psychic Crush. 2d4 Wisdom drain plus more from Mental Adversary.

But anyway. One level of psion is kinda neat as a melee type. Not as awesome as one level of Barbarian, but good nonetheless. The extra Will saves from the class and the psycrystal (what else are you going to take?) are worth losing one BAB and some hps. Besides, this is all for Biofeedback, Burst, Detect Psionics (Only if the Psionics = Magic is in use), or Inkling or Far Hand.

Then you can also take a Speed of Thought or Stand Still. ;)

Just for munchkininess, I love taking one level of Paladin to add to a class that already has a decent charisma. Get some lay on hands, but more importantly get the save bonus! Pretty good for a Sorceror to take. Not good for a bard if you use the alignment restrictions. Good for a rogue, if you have a rogue that is somewhat optimised for Use Magic Device.

Bard is a good one to cross with a class that has Perform.

Monk or Barbarian, maybe for the extra movement. Hardly seems worth it for a spellcaster. Might be a good option for a Rogue.

Cleric is an awesome one-level class! Picking the right god and domains means this class can be combined with almost any other. Good domains in the PHB for a one-level Cleric are Destruction, Healing, Luck, Magic, Travel, Trickery, and War. A Fighter or Rogue taking one level of Cleric with the Magic domain can now use any Cleric or Wizard wand or low-level scroll, even though the domain spell is useless.

My samurai took a level of monk as his first level (we started the campaign at 3rd) to represent his backstory of having been raised in a monastery but forced into the role of samurai when his elder brother was killed. Best choice I ever made with him. With Expertise and Wisdom-to-AC, I have a killer AC without wearing a stich of armor, making him more the "Samurai Jack" model than the heavily armored ones from Rokugan.

If you are going to be lawful and have a Wisdom 12+, you can do a lot worse than a level of monk for a character who won't wear armor anyway: +2 to all 3 saves, unarmed strike for 1d6, Wisdom-to-AC, evasion, a good skill list, stunning fist and flurry of blows...your wizard never need carry a silly little dagger again!
