One major thing I sure miss...

about 3E's release that we don't have today:

All the excitement and clamor over new product and new companies, and old products revisited. Whether 3rd party or WOTC proper. With 4E, of course 3rd party product is fairly non existant, and there's very little excitement created by the announcement of WOTC products in the pipeline(e.g.) The Manual of the Planes. There's a little discussion sure- but nothing like the 3.0 release era.

I used to log on to ENWorld back in 2000/2001 and every single day there were new products being announced I was really excited about.

There is NOT ONE product I am excited about in the pipeline for 4E. Not a single one. I want Ari's APG, and will buy it, but I'm not overly excited about it/chomping at the bit for it (no offense intended Ari). No adventures, no supplements, no settings. No magazines. Nothing.

Makes me sad :( (as sad as I can get over a silly game anyway)

I hate to say it, but I agree.

The new Edition just hasn't had that fantastic new release that captures everyone's interest. I remember when the psionics book (and expanded for 3.5) came out...people were tremendously excited.

For 4E? We've had the books for three months, and truth be told, I haven't picked up a single book since launch. I'm going to get the Adventurers Vault, but I haven't heard anything about it that actually makes me excited to go and pick it up. There are a lot of people in my gaming group that haven't even picked up the books yet.

Hopefully things will change, but I have to say the launch of the new edition has been a major "meh" for me so far.

The release of 4th edition has really invigorated the excitement over RPGs - RPGs other than D&D. I see all kinds of folks taking this opportunity to expore other systems. People are playing all kinds of other things now. The release of 4th edition has probably been the best thing to happen to (non-D&D) RPGs in a long, long time.

I miss it, too. I'm in the (apparent) minority of folks that are enjoying it. I picked up 4E adventures at Gen Con, have been running them since, and enjoying them tremendously. Even packed up old material to make space on my shelf for upcoming releases. *shrug*

I'm also not excited about anything announced so far from WotC. I think I will get the PHB2 when it's out, assuming I am still playing 4E then, but that's honestly about it. So far I have the 3 main books and the DM screen.

I'm really excited about the stuff Necromancer Games was planning, but sadly that is not forthcoming until we get a GSL that works.

Same here. I, too, am rather disappointed. I was so looking forward to the stuff Necro had planned and I was really hoping they would come back with old strenght... oh well, maybe it will happen once the GSL is changed.

You guys must have missed the panting over several of the Adventurer's Vault excerpts, the swordmage from the FRPG, and all the speculation about the races/classes in the PHBII.

People tend to forget that there was a gap between the release of 3e and any supplements, as well. The 3e books didn't come out all at once, and the first real expansion was the martial splatbook, Sword and Fist, which came out nearly six months after the PHB. The 3E psionic handbook came out in the following year, 2002. I personally think it's a little early to be disappointed by the lack of updated supplements. I mean, the 4e Manual of the Planes is due out soon, and the 4e FRCS just came out (and the 4e FR PHB is due shortly, iirc). Certainly, at Gencon, players were running to the WotC booth each day to try and score the new FRCS and were asking throughout the day....so some folks clearly were excited or at least eager.

As to individual excitement levels, I couldn't say. Our group wasn't waiting with baited breath for the PsiHB, but Sword and Fist was eagerly enjoyed when it arrived, containing new player options as it did. Not being FR fans, we cared not a jot then or now. The PHB II is what we're most anxiously awaiting, really. 4e's biggest weakness, IMHO, is that it needs more character stuff to diversify the classes more.

And, quite honestly, it's virtually impossible for 4e stuff to be as anticipated as 3e stuff for us, since 3e heralded our return to the D&D brand (and regular gaming). When we started 3e, we hadn't played a D&D game in years. When we got 4e, we'd been playing weekly for 8 years....so it's naturally a different vibe.

As happy as I am with the new edition, I have to agree with the OP, especially after I thought about the rest of the releases for this year:

Forgotten Realms Player's Guide - Pre-ordered. I like the new realms stuff so I can't wait to have this one in my grubby paws.

Scepter Tower of Spellgard - Meh. I may get it as an impulse buy.

Adventurer's Vault - Excited. I've always liked these kinds of books since the AD&D 2E Arms and Equipment Guide.

Deluxe Core Books - Not excited at all. I didn't even get the ones for the last edition.

DU2 Streets of Shadow: Dungeon Tiles - I like dungeon tiles, nuff said.

P1 King of the Trollhaunt Warrens, P2 Demon Queen’s Enclave - I bought H1-H3 to get a feel for the new edition's adventures, but I probably won't get any more unless they somehow stand out.

D&D Roleplaying Game Starter Set - I'm a sucker for these even though I haven't actually needed one since my first back in 91.

Martial Power - I bought the previous edition's splat books like this one and my players were blase about them, so I'll probably skip these unless I find myself playing appropriate characters in a campaign.

Demonweb Booster Pack - Minis tend to be impulse buys.

Draconomicon I: Chromatic Dragons - No interest whatsoever.

Manual of the Planes - I'll probably get this for the sake of completeness. Except for the Planescape setting, I have to admit the outer planes have never excited me much.

I dunno, there are several products in the announced WOTC pipeline that I'm really wanting. I'm not much of a FR player, so I don't see those as all that, but the magic items book, the martial power book, and the planes book all excite me a bit.
