One Nice Surprise To Gaming Online

I recently played my first game online, via AIM chat. I noticed one really interesting quirk to the experience. The online format seems to handle the party splitting up far better than tabletop gaming ever has. We just set up two different rooms, and played them simultaneously, with the DM doing a good job of keeping things moving along both paths.

Ph, yeah, online gaming certainly has its perks. The biggest one I've found is it's infinitely easier to roleplay when you don't know what the face of the person you're roleplaying with. It's alot easier to hit on the princess then on your fat friend Bob (to use one juvenile example). The biggest problem is that it goes noticably slower than tabletop, especially if you use pbp. But it's got its upsides.

Actually online is also a good method for the "your ally gets replaced by a doppelganger" session. You don't need to take your player out of the room and pass him/her secret notes that clues everyone in: all you need is send them a private message! (Same goes for Spot/Listen/Search/Perception checks, etc.)

I like online play a lot, though I usually use Yahoogroups than pbp or real-time systems.

Yes, it adds a lot. as my face to facte group says, our face to face group is sillier and we are more roll oriented, because online we are more role oriented.

Y'know, I didn't think of this but, you're completely right. Our current game has the party split up, with each half dealing with completely different issues, and it's working pretty seamlessly.
