One of my PCs is wearing a Lich's phylactery!

You could also just wait untill one of the player characters buys the farm, then let the lich take over the body then, inform the dead characters player (alone) what has happened and ask him to continue running that character

That is exactly what I would do.

I've always played it as the lich's body reforms near the phylactery.

That's how I run it. Back in a 2E campaign I had the lich's phylactery buried in a graveyard for just such purposes.

If you were really evil you might offer to enchant the phylactery with powerful enhancements. Few adventurer's going to break their unreplaceable incredibly useful artifact just because someone says it's evil.
One ring to rule them all... :D

Ok, help me out here...

(spoilers for Red Hand of Doom follow)

PCs in RHoD are expected to find a lich's phylactery and use it as a bargaining chip. What happens if the PCs try to destroy it instead? Does destroying the phylactery hurt the lich at all? Or does it just mean that, until he can create a new one, the lich's life force isn't protected and thus would be fearful of being destroyed?

Just had to be said. Someone was gonna eventually......figured it may as well be me. Strictly following original plans does not often a good DM make. Still, I like having overall plans, and I have no problem going along with strange developments if they won't ruin the game for the group (but if the PCs really want to check out the famous ancient red dragon's lair when they're 10th-level......well, red dragons have to eat, too). ;)

unless youve got a 10th level wizard with the shadowstaff and all energy substituted cold spells that ignore spell resistance and have no saving throw, then its going to be a bit of fun before everybody dies.
