D&D 5E One Shot Game

I have used 1-shots to introduce elements of my main game when one or more regular players could not make the game or when there is another player joining for a night. My main game was leading up to their first encounter with the BBEG and I wanted to highlight his evilness. I made a group of soldiers that was part of the city guard and had them try to defend the border fort. They all died except the one that managed to flee and warn the rest of the troops. The players got to see a few of his powers and had a dislike for the bad guy before the main party even met him.

I like one shots as a way to play builds that would be fun for a dip, but not for a whole campaign. They also make fun little palette cleansers when you've been playing the same character for several months and want to experience another style of PC.
