[Online] 4th Edition D&D Game

First Post
Hi

I'm looking to start running an online 4th edition game. I've been a DM for more than a decade now and have recently lost access to my tabletop group.

  • Game session to be held somewhere between Friday and Sunday (as best suites players).
  • My own game world that I've been developing for a long long time.
  • Expect a fair mix of RP and combat. Depending on situations one element or the other may dominate a session, but I don't think that's abnormal.
  • This is a points of light game in an absolute sense - the players are in an overcrowded city surrounded by a hostile wilderness, cut off from the rest of the world.
  • Deviations from core D&D amounts to a few race rebrandings (e.g. Halflings and Gnomes are considered dwarves. Eladrin are High Elves, Elves are Wood Elves, Half Elves are Mountain Elves and so on. Mechanically they remain constant) and a custom pantheon. Obviously the world history is its own, but otherwise things will be reasonably recognisable to any fantasy gaming fan.
  • My approach to the rules is that we start off following the letter and try things out (I find this varies by group rather than being an absolute) and tweak as we see fit. Therefore, rules updates and so on will generally be followed.
  • I intend to use Maptools for the tabletop, but am currently undecided on the voice side of things. Suggestions welcome.
  • A good character background and ideas for shaping the campaign are always welcome. Often bonus feats for good backgrounds are allotted.
Regarding session time and day, I prefer something in the 4 - 6 hour range. I'm in the UK but if my players are from elsewhere I can easily accomodate US timezones over the weekend.
My preference would be for a saturday evening, but you can't run a game without players, so I'm happy to be flexible.

Questions and clarifications here, applications via PM.

I look forward to hearing from you.

I'll be forwarding a primer on the setting within the next day to interested parties (I'll post it here if I can boil it down enough to be appropriate for a forum post).

Essentially though, I allow any published material with minor racial exceptions - e.g. warforged, and the new shardmind. I've never allowed psionics in my setting in previous versions because they were too sci-fi or were too incompatible when only one player was psionic. I'm a little undecided with the new psionic rules however, as they gell much better than previous editions.

Any alignment is allowable, however its essential that a character have sufficient genuine motivation to work with a party - while an amount disruption is fine, and an amount of conceit when the decisions a character make don't really fit, it becomes more and more difficult for a group to make joint decisions as their overall story starts to pull apart because of radically different agendas.

My only usual limitation is on Dragon/Dungeon based stuff. While there is plenty of good stuff in there, its usually the horribly broken stuff that catches a players eye. So all I ask is that you show it to me first. Usually I'll say yes or suggest a compromise, but occasionally I'll laugh and ask you if you seriously think thats ok!

Btw, I personally thought underdark was a really good book, although I'm an oddball who finds any book that gives me at least one great idea for a story or adventure was worth the money.

Player in Waiting

Howdy!

I'm an experienced gamer. Would love to join game flexible on timing with a few restrictions that I can work with if it comes up. Im in the US but Im sure it wont be a problem. Your Saturday night is my afternoon and my wife loves it when i'm done at a reasonable hour. LOL.

I always sugggest using maptools and tokbox.com for voice. I used to host the voice so the DM's computer wouldnt bog down with too many apps running and it always worked out great. Up to you folks.

My email is lendinghm at yahoo dot com if you want to contact me or send me details. I can play any role an dbe happy with it, but I particularly like fighters, clerics, and Rangers

Hey there!

So far it seems like our timing is going to be based around US central.

Only absolute character choice so far hs been a fighter.

Will forward more details to you later.

Thanks for the interest.

I am thinking of playing a fighter as well.

Can i get the email of the player playing the fighter so we can get together and work them up for maximum synergy? Or you could pass on my email.

I'd like to use tokbox for a voice chat session so we can tweak our fighters to mesh really well as a battle line. Ive done this before and made a frontline pair of fighters with reach weapons that were like the Great Wall of China. Enemies just couldn't get past them. Our squishies in the back had a field day! And if we had a leader or controller that could buff us....

I have always favored a fighter with a reach weapon that lets me control a huge section of the battle line (from 3 to 5 squares wide and deep). Two fighters working together should be able to hold a static line almost indefinitely. If you are playing the fighter, dont hesitate to email me and offer a time that is good for a voice chat. I'll set it up and we can get our characters sync'd.

My email is lendinghm@yahoo.com

Every other player is welcome to show up as well and we can mesh the whole party for maximum impact during an encounter. I have found that this type of cooperation during character creation tends to put our encounter level at party +2 or +3 which means better fights, better rewards, and faster advancement! Let me know.

character pre submission

okay, here is my preliminary character. I designed it to tie into the other fighter's abilities. Between the two of us, we should be able to hold a battle line superbly. We will definitely need some ranged support via spells or archer types to keep from being slaughtered by enemy spell casters or archers.

The concept is a high AC with decent mobility and a reach weapon. This allows me to have a 4 square by 4 square threat range against enemies. I would be able to attack any creature within that threat zone for good damage, and most rounds more than two enemies can get attacked and once in a while three.

A cleric with the daily power "Moment of Glory" would be a spectacular addition to the party....just a thought. Any artillery would also be a solid addition.
