Could be a bad DM... except this is pretty much the only time we've seen an NPC explicitly-designed to screw over a PC. So more like a "surprise challenge" from a DM instead.

What makes you think Z is a player character? I always figured the Linear Guild, being the adversaries, are NPCs.

I was unclear. Z is probably not a PC (supposedly none of the characters are...) but I think Z does a good job personifying that type of player/character regardless.

I am dissenting.

I liked this strip because V does historically behave more like a hammer, rather than a diverse mage who depends on many tricks. V turning invisible and leaving combat has been done before, but that was during a losing battle vs armies. Anytime V has had a single opponent that challenged the elf, V has taken it as a challenge and fought to near death. V deciding to give up on personal ego and leave the battle midway is actually a bit of character growth, in my opinion.

This was my main takeaway from this strip, too. Though I'm not sure what you're "dissenting" from - the above posts may focus elsewhere, but I don't think they're actually saying anything incompatible with your point.

Dissenting from those who think it is a 'meh' strip.
My first thought was, "Who has said it was a "meh" strip? I went back up the thread and found only one person has said this. Ironically, I gave that post xp, but for the, "Z's a great example of a cheating munchkin player and a DM that doesn't do book checks," note, not the "meh."

I think it's kind of funny/interesting that you read this thread and saw "those" (plural) saying meh. I read this thread and didn't see any meh. Turns out we were both wrong. There was one.
