I have never regarded or even heard of playgrounds impeding children's creativity. It seems ridiculous on its face, based if nothing else on personal experience on the monkey bars 40 years ago.

There was a time, starting in the 2000s (edit: not sure on dates) where, in an effort to increase safety, playgrounds were redesigned. Over time, playground architects realized they were made "too safe" because they were boring and limited risk and creativity.

The metaphor of sandbox and playground is funny because playgrounds rarely use sand as a base anymore because it's 'unhygienic' and sand tends to enhance creative play verses a rubber base.

I also come from the generation of super 'unsafe' playgrounds but they've changed.

I think if you started from nothing you could redefine sandbox, playground, and theme park, but too many people have there own definitions of sandbox by now.

My kids are in college now, but when they were playground age the things still allowed running pewpew games etc. But it is true that I have not been on a playground in a decade.

I think Sandbox, Playground, and Theme Park can be apt analogies to help frame a discussion about the particulars of someone's playstyle.
