OMG that's funny! I laughed my ass off at what V said, then showed strip #1 to my girlfriend so she'd understand why I was howling with laughter.

Rich is brilliant. :)

What level are they anyway?

I mean, they have sufficient wealth for the DM to justify giving them +5 weapons, which puts them at least at 11th level, but most of their spells are 3rd level (or thereabouts) but we know that V should be able to cast "Teleport", which puts them over 10th level again...

And that Roy has sufficient Fortitude save to survive a 10,000 gp trap...

THe highest level spells anyone has cast all seem to indicate that the party is around 10th level. Of course, i could be wrong.

Really, i just wish I knew...

they dont have a level. If they did, it would be too ridgid and not funny. At first i thought maybe they started out at level 1, but realized they have no level, just like the deadale whives clip. The jokes do seem to be focused in midlevels though, but they jump around alot. Its not worth it to limit charicters abilities in stories by giving them levels, even though it is based of d&d, i think its a bad idea.

Thats what really bugs me about stating charicters in the d&d novals. Its a book. Its hard to take creative liberty if everything is stated out. Although that is to say the books never follow the stats (or it might be vis versa) as the stats are hollow comparisons. i never read the d&d books anyway. Makes me feel dirty.

V is at least 13th level, remember he was adding Power Word Blind to his spellbook (using 7 pages, though Blind is only a short word.) And Durkon has cast Heal more than once.

Note that you don't need to be able to cast a spell in order to add it to your spellbook. The only requirement in the rules is that you succeed on making the necessary DC 15+spell level spellcraft check.

Assuming max ranks and a starting int of 15, as well as the knowledge arcana synergy, that is easily achieved at 4th level while taking ten (10+ 7 (ranks) +3 int +2 synergy).

Higher stats, the use of a guidance spell, the assistance of a party member using aid other, or simply a lucky roll make it achievable even earlier.

Whether there is any point to learning spells that you are 9 levels away from being able to cast is an open question, but my observation is that many wizard players look at the size of their spellbook in an almost compensatorial manner and jump at any chance to learn a new spell no matter how unlikely they are to ever actually use it.

So, while scribing Power Word Blind is an indication that V is high level, it is not positive proof that he is 13th level or higher (doubly so when you consider that the party does not actually have fixed stats and abilities).

Back when V presented his/her bill of services to Miko, I actually took the numbers and figured out what level /she was if s/he was charging "by the book" for the fireball itself (ignoring the other charges). I forget what I came up with, but I'm pretty sure it was either 12th or 13th. Of course, they may have leveled since then...
