There was a saying we had used to have in my old gaming group.

"Never give the GM ideas."

We would even chant it at times (usually after one of the players casually mentioned a particularly evil idea in front of the GM).

I found that particularly true when running Call of Cthuhlu, you could just throw a series of random grizzly death for them to investigate, then pick the actual cause from one of the bizarre and deadly ideas they came up with. It was usually much better than the one you were thinking of yourself and more of a headache for them as well.

I've done that. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it ends up just being confusing, but I have completely changed the back story in response to player theorizing.
