OOTS 495! Holy Mom!

Heh. Well, I mean, most people who give stuff up do it because they think it'd bad for one reason or another, not because they don't like it/don't want to do it.

So, imagine that for your whole life you live in moderation because you feel that the benefits of eating/drinking in moderation, monogamous relationships, playing by the rules, etc. outweigh the results of behaving irresponsibly.

But now imagine that you get to go to a realm where you can suddenly indulge yourself without any bad consequences. Eat lots of rich, fattening food without gaining a pound. Drink cocktails without a hangover. Engage in meaningless, recreational sex without regrets. Etc. What would you do?

Yeah, sooner or later you'd get tired of it, but I think for most people it'd be fun at first. Kind of like how otherwise well-behaved kids sometimes go a little crazy when they get their first taste of freedom in college, then eventually settle back down into being your average responsible adult.

Yeah, sooner or later you'd get tired of it...

Maybe after a few centuries.

Well- ROy's Navi did say that most people spend a few decades in the lower part of the mountain before even trying to climb it...

And enlightenment comes at different stages as you climb - so if someone is content at 1/3 way up... it may take much longer to bore yourself with it...

I can disagree with that. Organized religions that I've seen don't state that overeating et. al. is bad because you get fat... it's bad because it distracts you from connecting spiritually from the hereafter. So if that's the usual rationale, why would you expect to be spritually distracted even worse in the hereafter?

Eating & drinking & sleeping around I can see in a Chaotic afterlife (e.g., Valhalla). A Lawful hereafter should follow the same laws it set for you in mortal life (that consistency, in fact, is the whole point of what it means to be fundamentally Lawful).

Well, I probably can't be specific without breaking the rules, but I can think of some major religions that specifically suggest that one of the perks of the afterlife is that you finally get to enjoy the things you were expected to give up in the mortal realm, like drinking and dallying with virgins. So, I guess I disagree with *you*. ;)

Plus, it's just human nature. I know far, far fewer people who don't desire to do chaotic/bad things (easy to give up what you don't want anyway!) than I do people who give up chaotic/bad things they *would* want to do if they didn't feel they were "wrong". These people aren't "Lawful Good" in terms of base/animal desires, but they are Lawful Good in terms of intellectual beliefs and behavior.

So, I still feel that Rich got it right... most people would indulge in all the base stuff they had to give up, now that they're in a paradise where it's no longer "wrong"... then eventually realize that they didn't really miss much anyway in terms of what makes them truly happy. The difference between this and the Chaotic realms is that for the Chaotic people these hedonistic desires *are* what makes them happy - they don't have any other aspirations to move on to.
