1e drow as created by Gygax were very powerful (with no 3e LA mechanic) and became a PC race in his 1e Unearthed Arcana. They had special two weapon fighting abilities and could become cavaliers, a very powerful knight class with lance and other knight weapon speicifc bonuses, also introduced in Unearthed Arcana. Female drow got more powers than male ones. If a cavalier was a female elf they could get unicorns as a mount as a class feature (and drow are elves).

Two weapon lance fighting female drow cavaliers on unicorns is pretty hard core pushing the system for mechanical benefits.
